I started The Law Office of Hasson D. Barnes, LLC. with the single goal of providing clients exceptional legal service in the difficult areas of Family and Criminal Law. Through my work with clients I have developed several other practice areas, to include but not limited to, complex mediation (mediating cases as diverse as real property disputes, contractor claims, and custody disputes), personal injury, and business representation (aiding businesses in everything from entity formation to contract litigation).

i represent both private and public sector labor unions in contract negotiations, representation cases, unfair labor practice proceedings, discipline and discharge cases, interest and rights arbitrations, and in impasse and fact finding proceedings.  I have a wide range of experience in both civil and criminal litigation, having appeared on behalf of clients before administrative agencies, in district and circuit trial courts, and in Maryland’s appellate courts.    I graduated from Cornell University in 1977, earning a bachelor’s degree in Industrial and Labor Relations.  I graduated from Antioch School of Law in 1980.  While in law school I clerked for the National Labor Relations Board’s Division of Judges.       i presently serve as Chair-Elect of the Maryland State Bar Association Labor and Employment Law Section Council. I represent both employees and employers in state and federal court, as well as administrative hearings, handling all aspects of labor and employment law. My practice primarily focuses on employment litigation involving Title VII, Age Discrimination in Employment Act (“ADEA”), Americans with Disabilities Act (“ADA”) and the Fair Labor Standards Act (“FLSA”) (single plaintiff and collective action). I also handle matters on appeal and regularly counsel clients on hiring and firing decisions, wage and hour regulations, Family and Medical Leave Act ("FMLA") issues, collective bargaining matters, employment policies and restrictive covenants.

While in law school, I assisted the Snyder Litigation Team in several multimillion dollar cases, including a five month trial against the largest corporation in the world, ExxonMobil, resulting in a $150 million dollar verdict.. I volunteered my time at the Maryland Office of the Attorney General, Health Advocacy Unit, where I specialized in health and healthcare related cases. I dealt with complex insurance issues and helped individuals with no means mediate their claims with insurance companies and healthcare providers.. I graduated from Towson University with honors and received the James L. Dunbar, Jr. award for outstanding graduates from the College of Business and Economics.. I went onto the University of Baltimore School of Law where I graduated with honors. I was an active member of the Student Bar Association, American Bar Association Law Student Division, Environmental Law Society, and Criminal Law Society.. I was nominated for the Daily Record’s "Twenty in their Twenties" award.  I have over eighty hours of medication/dispute resolution training and I am certified mediator in the State of Maryland. I am an active member of the Baltimore City Bar Association, Baltimore County Bar Association, American Bar Association, the Maryland State Bar Association, and the DC Bar Association.

I practice property and casualty insurance law. That means I deal with legal issues about insurance for things like cars, homes, businesses, professional malpractice, cyber insurance, that sort of thing. (One of the only major areas of insurance I do not do is health insurance. That's a whole other ballgame.) I represent insurance companies and insureds (people with insurance). My practice is split about sixty percent insurer and forty percent insured. I hope that my experience working in-house for major insurers, as a CPCU, and as a trial lawyer and small business owner help me provide better representation to my clients.. Most of my practice is coverage litigation --fighting over whether an insurance policy covers a loss. I also do bad faith litigation --fighting over whether an insurance company denied a claim in bad faith. And I do malpractice litigation --fighting over whether an insurance agent negligently failed to set up the insurance policy right.. I am also a trial lawyer. I try cases to verdicts. I've been doing it since the 80's.. I am also a mediator. I work for several local circuit courts to help mediate cases so they do not get to trial.. I have also served as an expert witness in litigation about insurance bad faith for both insurers and insureds.
