My first job out of law school was as a Law Clerk for the Honorable Lawrence Gubow, US District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, in Detroit. I stayed for two years and it was the perfect job for me to learn how to practice law, how judges think, and how good attorneys prepare their cases for court. Judge Gubow gave his law clerks a lot of responsibility, was super smart, a very hard worker, passionate about being a judge, compassionate for all, and courteous to the attorneys and their clients appearing before him. Although Judge Gubow recently passed away, he continues to be a role model for me. In 1977, I joined and became partners in a new law firm with Carl Gromek and Mark Bendure. Carl later became the Chief Clerk of the Michigan Court of Appeals and then went on to be the Clerk of the Michigan Supreme Court. Mark and I have remained partners since 1977.
