I received my Bachelor of Arts, majoring in history and minoring in anthropology, from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2008. I subsequently entered the workforce, but ultimately decided to pursue a career in the legal field. I obtained my Juris Doctor, Magna Cum Laude, from Michigan State University College of Law in 2016. During law school, I worked as a judicial extern for the Honorable Thomas P. Boyd of the Ingham County 55th District Court; as a student law clerk for the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services; and as a law clerk for two prominent civil ligation firms. Also as a student, I participated in MSU’s Geoffrey Fieger Trial Practice Institute, which is a rigorous two-year litigation focused certificate program.. Following graduation from law school, I served as a judicial law clerk/court officer to the Honorable Rosemarie E. Aquilina of the Ingham County 30th Circuit Court. I took the Michigan Bar in February 2017, and was formally admitted to practice law in Michigan on May 24, 2017. On July 10, 2017, I joined Hackney Grover as an associate attorney. I presently focus my practice in the areas of insurance defense—first and third-party No-Fault litigation, as well as premises liability litigation—and construction law.
I graduated from MSU with a Bachelor of Arts in 1987. While at MSU I was a member of the varsity golf team. Immediately upon graduation, I entered law school at Thomas M. Cooley in Lansing, Michigan. I also began employment at the firm of Abood, Abood and Rheaume. Although the standard graduation path from Cooley was 9 semesters, I accelerated and graduated in 7 while also maintaining a high GPA; graduating with cum laude status in the top 5 of my class. Upon graduation, I was offered a prestigious position to clerk for Supreme Court Justice Michael F. Cavangah, where I was employed for approximately 2 years. After finishing my clerkship with the Supreme Court, I returned to the law firm of Abood, Abood & Rheume where I worked for 5 years. In 1997, I decided to open my own firm (the Abood Law Firm), and in 1998 other family members joined my firm including F. Joseph Abood (brother) and Fredric S. Abood (Father).. Although most lawyers today specialize in one or two areas of practice, I have been fortunate enough to have clients that have requested my services in a wide area of practice. I have acted as Lead Counsel in real estate transactions exceeding $20,000,000. I was Lead Counsel on one of the more complicated Brownfield Credit Real Estate developments in the state. Admittedly, I am most noted for the number of high profile criminal defense cases, including cases that have drawn the attention of the national media. Such cases include defending Drew Peterson out of the state of Illinois for approximately 2 years (Nov 2007 to April 2010). My representation of Drew Peterson included having the court enter an Order requiring the State to return his property that was seized after several search warrants were issued, and the court dismissing a gun charge against him. In addition, I was one of three attorneys that represented Drew Peterson during an evidentiary hearing from January 19, 2010 to February 19, 2010 in which I crossed the most witnesses and successfully helped suppress 10 of the 15 hearsay statements. I also represented Lisa Holland who was charged with Open Murder in the death of her 7 year old adopted son. The case was covered state wide including national media. In May of 2009, a former Ingham County Judge was charged with OWI. The Abood Law Firm filed a Motion to Suppress and the case was dismissed.. I have extensive experience in commercial litigation including non competes, claims of tortious interference, wrongful death, wrongful discharge and personal injury cases. In 2009, I obtained a verdict of approximately $450,000 plus interest against a bonding company that bonded a general contractor which subsequently failed to pay my client for services rendered. I recently obtained a verdict for a major real estate company when its client failed to pay a commission earned by my client. I have been asked to speak at Cooley Law School and Michigan State University Law School on a number of occasions based on the high profile cases that I have handled.. If you have a case that is going to court, you should consider contacting the Abood Law Firm.
I graduate from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science with a Specialization in International Business. While at MSU, I played on the varsity softball team. After I graduated, I attended Michigan State University College of Law. While at MSU, I was selected to participate in the Trial Practice Institute, which is a specialized litigation program. I received Jurisprudence Book Awards in Evidence, Trademark & Unfair Competition, Decedent's, Trusts, and Estates. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from MSU.. My areas of practice include Criminal Law, Personal Injury, Domestic Relations, and Civil Litigation.. Throughout my tenure working at the Abood Law Firm, I have worked on a number of high profile cases. I have extensive experience working on OWI cases. In 2011, I worked on over 50 different OWI cases with over 1/3 of the cases resulting in no criminal conviction. I have worked in a number of different jurisdictions, including East Lansing, Lansing, Marshall, Battle Creek, Traverse City, and all the way up to St. Ignace.
I concentrate in the areas of business organizations, oil and gas, health care, property tax appeals and complex commercial litigation. I have appeared before state and federal courts, and state and federal administrative agencies. My trial experience includes several jury and bench trials. In addition to being admitted as a lawyer in Michigan, I am also admitted in Illinois. My goal is always to first seek a positive resolution for my clients; however, there comes a time when the opposition is not willing to accept the realities of the position in which they find themselves. In these cases, you want an aggressive and effective litigation attorney in your corner.
I am committed to results. I am a trial lawyer who will take your case to trial if there are no other options. No matter how intense your situation, how badly you need a certain outcome or how dire the facts of your case. I spent thousands of hours and tens of thousands of dollars in learning forensic evidence, the law regarding drugs and alcohol and the phisiological affect of drugs in the human body. . I am a leader. I wrote the book on OWI for West Publishing. I am an adjunct professor of DUI Law and Practice at Thomas M. Cooley Law School and Forensic Evidence in Criminal Law. I spoke over dozens of times to teach other lawyers. The reason: others look to me for leadership and learning. I developed an in depth knowledge of forensic science. I am the lawyer whose litigation led the Michigan State Police to change the way that it handles blood alcohol analyses. I was selected as a presenter for the 2012, 2013 and 2014 American Academy of Forensic Science (AAFS) annual conferences. I practice exclusively in criminal defense with an emphasis on defending citizens charged with driving while intoxicated. My practice style is to utilize litigation to position a client to achieve results.. I am in court very often and in stressful situations. Those situations are situations in which I thrive. To relax I run, read and write often. I spent 10 years as a journalist working in television and radio. I worked for a statewide radio news network, a CBS-owned radio station in Detroit and for a television station in Lansing.. I believe in the right to have a trial. I believe that you as a citizen, have the right to have a lawyer stand by you through every phase of a criminal case.. Our constitution is a sacred document formed thanks to the blood and sacrifice of our founders and preserved by the modern day footsoldiers of trial lawyers. I am proud to be part of the loyal fraternity of constitutional warriors who protect the rights of those citizens accused of crimes, no matter how heinous those alleged crimes may be to the accusors or the public.
