After law school, Jim served as a Law Clerk to the Honorable Dale V. Sandstrom of the North Dakota Supreme Court. Jim is licensed to practice law in North Dakota and Minnesota, and he focuses his practice on plaintiff’s personal injury and wrongful death law.. Jim enjoys outdoor activities, reading, and spending time with family and friends. He volunteers his time with the Special Olympics of North Dakota and serves on the Board of Directors of the West Fargo Educational Foundation. Jim and his wife live in Bismarck.
I have had a diverse legal and business career. I was a partner with one of North Dakota’s largest law firms for nearly 10 years. During that time I developed my practice to include employment law, business litigation, and collections. I left private practice to become General Counsel and Vice President of Human Resources for a privately held real estate and venture capital business with extensive real estate and other small business holdings. This broadened my knowledge and experience in starting and acquiring businesses and in the operating complexities of such businesses.. While acting as General Counsel, I recognized the value of this unique perspective as both business owner and business attorney. In 2008 I founded Fremstad Law with a clear focus on bringing this advantage to my clients.. I graduated from the North Dakota School of Law with honors including Order of the Coif and Order of the Barristers and served as Research Editor of the North Dakota Law Review. After graduation, I clerked for the North Dakota Supreme Court and then joined what was then Nilles, Hansen and Davies, Ltd in Fargo. I am currently licensed in both North Dakota and Minnesota and have also appeared before several tribal courts.. I have been active in the Fargo Moorhead Community. I am the Past President of the Cass County Bar Association, the Past President of The Fargo Rotary Club (), the Past Board Chair of Healthcare Equipment Recycling Organization (), a past member of the North Dakota Judiciary Standards Committee, and a past member Board Member of the Anne Carlsen Center in Jamestown, North Dakota (). I am married and have two children.

I grew up in Minot, North Dakota. I moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota in 1999 and attended the University of North Dakota where I graduated Summa Cum Laude and received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 2003. I continued my education and graduated from the University of North Dakota School of Law with distinction in 2006. I started my legal career as an associate attorney for a small law firm in Grand Forks before moving to Fargo, North Dakota in 2008 where I worked as an associate attorney for Birrenkott Law Office through September of 2010. I have owned my practice since September, 2010. I have been practicing law in North Dakota since 2006. I am a member of the North Dakota State Bar Association, the Minnesota Bar Association, and the Cass County Bar Association.In addition to my primary practice areas of family law and estate planning; I am a certified Parenting Investigator, Parenting Coordinator, Guardian Ad Litem, and Qualified Neutral Mediator.
