I was born in Dallas and raised in Arlington. I graduated from the University of Texas with a BA in Psychology and went straight into law school at Texas Tech. I went to law school knowing that I wanted to be a family law attorney because I enjoy working with, and helping, people.. I received my law degree, passed the bar, and began my legal career in Fort Worth. I started my practice with foster parent adoptions. I soon went to work for the Attorney General of Texas, where I worked for three years. Then I went back out on my own and reopened my family law practice in Fort Worth, Texas.. I have 4 boys who range in age from 29-9. Having experienced my own divorce a few years ago, I now have a new perspective. Having personally made it through the ordeal, and a subsequent modification, I now understand first hand the emotional turmoil that my clients go through. I believe these experiences help me relate to my clients and encourage me to be creative in my suggestions for settlement.
I have been practicing law for almost 26 years, engaging in the general practice of law with an emphasis on criminal defense, personal injury and civil litigation. I have successfully litigated or settled numerous cases for his clients, including personal injury cases such as automobile accidents, premises liability malpractice cases, and dog bite cases, as well as workers compensation cases, social security disability claims, contract disputes, employer-employee disputes, and business disputes. I have also handled numerous criminal defense matters over the years, ranging from crimes of violence, motor vehicle offenses including operating under the influence of liquor or drugs, to crimes against property, and drug offenses. David's practice areas include Family Law, Business Litigation/Formation and Public Sector Law.“The depth and diversity of our services set our firm apart from others. It’s rare that clients can go to the same source for a divorce, business lawsuit or formation issues, estate planning or criminal defense and be assured of effective representation in each matter. Our lawyers are equally skilled in transactional matters and courtroom litigation, and extremely knowledgeable in a number of Civil, Corporate and Criminal legal matters.” A seasoned Litigator and dedicated Public Servant, David L. Cook’s professional and community service roots date back to his teenage years. “I developed a strong interest in law while still in high school, and I was also interested in public service,” David recalled. “I learned that a large number of State Legislators were also attorneys. As I began college, I firmly believed having knowledge of one (law) would help me with the other (Public Service). " “One of my mentors, R. L. Anderson, who was also my High School counselor, helped me get a part-time job in Harold English’s office my Senior year,” he continued, referring to a long-time Tarrant County lawyer. “This experience worked out great and solidified my interest in practicing law. Mostly because I saw that Mr. English was really making a difference in other people’s lives.” Today, David is actively engaged in the pursuit of both of his passions: He’s the leader of Harris Cook’s daily operations, a prominent Family and Business Law attorney---and he's also the Mayor of Mansfield, a post he’s held since 2008. “I enjoy the challenges of both jobs and how they often complement one another,” said Cook. “I also like the fact that I’m following the example and tradition established by our Firm’s Founder, Senator Chris Harris.” David was admitted to the Texas Bar in 1997, following his graduation from Texas Wesleyan University School of Law, which is now known as Texas A&M University School of Law. He completed his undergraduate work at Stephen F. Austin State University, where he received a degree in Public Administration. He’s since become one of the most sought-after Family Law attorneys in Tarrant County, a specialty in which he’s Board Certified. Within that discipline, he specializes in cases that involve Complex Division of Assets or Contested Child Custody matters, and often finds himself representing business owners. “What I find rewarding is that even though I’m usually working with someone at their lowest point in the beginning, I can almost always guide them through the process in such a way that they end up in a much better place than where I found them,” he said. “I feel like it’s a Practice Area where I can make a positive impact and a lasting impression.”
