While serving as a prosecutor and then as General Counsel for the Kansas Board of Healing Arts for many years, I realized the difference it made to have a well-qualified and experienced attorney representing the professionals in the cases before the Board. Many professionals who attempted to represent themselves or had a "lawyer friend" helping them struggled with the processes. Since going into private practice in 2017, I am now able to assist individuals who find themselves the subject of an investigation or disciplinary action by their professional licensing board. I also provide scope of practice advice, review of contracts and forms, assist in setting up new practice entities, represent providers with peer review matters and other health care related issues. I believe in a personalized approach to representation and being efficient in the time spent so as to minimize the expense for clients as much as possible.
When not practicing law, I enjoy non-legal reading and writing, and of course spending time with my family--being outdoors, playing games, visiting national parks, singing and serving others (including on a couple non-profit boards). My wife, Beth, is a Physical Therapist working in both geriatrics and pediatrics, but her primary occupation is home educator. We are active in our church and enjoy bible study. We have a loyal, somewhat obedient Irish Goldendoodle named Sherlock, several cats, lots of chickens and a guineafowl that showed up on our little farm and never left.
We believe that the client always comes first.. No matter the circumstances, we'll treat you with respect and dignity, and provide sound advice and skilled legal counsel. With 19 years of legal experience, we offer effective and aggressive representation, with client satisfaction as our top priority. Our reputation, integrity and history of successful litigation speaks for itself. Martindale-Hubbell rated for Very High Legal Ability and Ethical Standards, and Client Distinction Award for Demonstrated Excellence in Quality of Service, Overall Value, Responsiveness and Communication Ability.

My partner, Mike Stang, and I have been handling workers' compensation claims for more than 20 years each. We both started as defense attorneys representing insurance carriers and employers. This provides us with better insight into the analysis and approach used by the other side and how to defeat them.. We recognize the frustrations and doubts that arise when a work-related injury occurs. It is very important to us personally that our clients have a full understanding of the process and what can be achieved. More than this, however, we work hard to gain the trust of our clients that we will do everything possible to secure the medical treatment and disability benefits they rightfully deserve. We truly care about our clients and want them to know this both by how they are treated throughout the claims process and through the results we can achieve for them.

I initially became interested in the field of Elder Law when my grandmother entered a nursing home while I was in law school. By living through the emotional and financial turmoil that every family experiences when a loved one goes through this stage of life, I learned first hand how a passionate, caring attorney can be a tremendous help. Through my practice of law, I strive to help families every day and uphold the dignity of my elder clients.
I completed the NHTSA/IACP Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Practitioner Course taught by Walden, Platt & Associates in 2008. I am also a KCMBA Mentor Attorney in the area of criminal defense.
I chose the field of DUI defense for many reasons. I have a great deal of experience in all areas of the criminal law, and it is my opinion that more people are falsely accused of DUI than any other crime. Many Judges and jurors assume a person is impaired if he or she cannot walk perfectly heel-to-toe on a line or stand on one leg for thirty seconds. The fact is, most people cannot do these things after having nothing to drink. Try to do theses things in your living room, then imagine trying to do them on the side of a busy street after being pulled out of your car by a police officer. Additionally, I like the scientific aspects of this field, such as the effects of alcohol and drugs on the human body and the inability of breath testing machines to accurately measure a person's alcohol level.
I am an attorney in Overland Park. I focus my practice on helping people charged with committing crimes in Johnson County.
