In addition to my workers' compensation law practice, I am a single mother of two boys - now men -- and I enjoy playing classical piano.. I was a piano performance major when I began college and switched to a pre-law major after discovering I wanted to make a meaningful contribution to the world through working as an attorney.  It was at that point, I completely stopped playing the piano.. Twenty-seven years later, I started practicing the piano again and even took up piano lessons again with the intent of competing in International Amateur Piano Competitions.  I was a winner in the Seattle International Piano Competition in 2010 and had the opportunity to perform in Benaroya Hall.  In 2011, I was a quarter-finalist (top 15 out of 100) in the Paris International Piano Competition.  My next competition is again in Paris  scheduled in March 2015.  My favorite piece (at this time) is Chopin's 4th Ballade in f minor.  Some days I can play it better than others.

I consider myself lucky to have spent a career in a field to which I was attracted as a child, and which still provides me with plenty of reasons to look forward to going to work each day. Throughout my career, I have focused on representing individuals, rather than corporations. My clients have come from all walks of life, and all parts of the world. People of every personality type have walked through my door. I have represented both homeless people and corporate executives, proponents of civil disobedience as well as law enforcement officials. Despite their differences, the people I have represented have shared one thing in common: something to which they are entitled has been denied. Trying to restore what has been taken away from them keeps me motivated.. I have spent most of my life and all of my career in the Pacific Northwest, which I love. I was raised in various parts of Alaska and Washington, My first job was picking blueberries and raspberries in Whatcom County, just south of the Canadian border. Then, it was work in orchards in central Washington and construction in Southeast Alaska. In such work, I became familiar with what it’s like to put in a 12- or 14-hour day. Such work also taught me that I’m not all that good working with my hands, so I had best figure out something to do that didn’t require such skills. The law beckoned.. After law school, I went into private practice. I left Scott, Kinney, Fjelstad & Mack in 2016 after 25 years to start my own practice. Aside from having a difficult boss, I am liking the challenge and freedom a solo practice provides. I can take the cases I want to take, and pursue the causes I want to pursue. And, of equal importance, I don’t have to make any excuses to anyone if I want to take off to go flyfishing, and I can play a guitar in my office, if the mood were to strike. I would, however, need to shut the door. I do, of course, have neighbors.. After nearly 30 years of working as a lawyer, I understand that people aren’t coming to see me because all is right in their world. Rather, they need help trying to fix something that’s gone wrong, something that the law might remedy. I may not be able to fix all the problems that come to me, but I will bring the same client-centered approach to trying to fix such problems that guided me when I started in this profession.

Hello! Before we go any further, let me first say that I'm sorry you are in the situation where you are looking for legal help. I hope wherever your search takes you, that you find the help you are looking for.. In today's legal profession, most attorneys have a specialty or a small group of specialties -- the days of the "general practitioner" have largely disappeared, not unlike what we all experience when we go to the doctor. My practice is limited to representing workers who have been hurt or become sick due to their work. Representing workers has been my only job since the fall of 2002. Prior to that, I was an Assistant Attorney General representing the Department of Labor & Industries, and for a couple of years, I was in private practice representing hospitals and health care workers.. There are many terms people use to describe the types of cases I help people with: "workers' comp" or "workers' compensation;" "L and I;" "Labor & Industry" are a few examples. If you think you have been injured at work, or become sick due to conditions at work, feel free to reach out to me and we'll see if I can answer any of your questions, point you in the right direction, and/or explore whether it is time for you to consider hiring legal representation. Even if I am not able to represent you, I am happy to try to provide you with resources and referrals that will hopefully be useful to you and/or your loved ones.. If you are curious about my personal background, I was born and raised north of Seattle, and stayed in Washington State until my husband and I moved to Chicago in the mid-1990s so I could go to law school. We came back home after I graduated, and we've been so blessed to live in Seattle since our return in 1999. My husband, an Ellensburg native, and I have two kids who both headed south to the Bay Area for college after being stuck  too long in their bedrooms during COVID.  One is in San Francisco, the other in Santa Clara/San Jose.  Like most families, our kids' passions continue dictate much of how we spend our time. Our daughter is an equestrian in the hunter/jumper disciplines. A couple of years ago, she and I also adopted a rescue mare who we adore and continue to work with to bring her comfort, new skills & jobs, and security.  My daughter also loves to help produce live preformances just returned from a semester abroad in Copenhagen.  I love to quilt and do other handwork and treasure a nap or two on weekends.  My son is a freshman in college, the along with his dad/my husband the travel around the US and Canada racing RC Cars ridiculously fast.  He's also taken a shine to baseball in recent years and loves to hear our stories about the 1995 Mariner's playoff run.  My husband works in telecommunications and we live with our 2 poodle-mixes in Seattle in a home we purchased from my husband's great-great-aunt who bought the house with her husband new in the 1950s.. Please don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you think I might be able to help.. Take care,KLM
