Collaborative principles allow this to happen in a safe and respectful environment.. One benefit of resolving things outside of court is preservation of existing relationships. A therapist I know put it very well when she said that in a divorce, we end the relationship of husband/wife, but the relationships of mother/father/children continue. It is those relationships of father/mother/children that need to be protected to the extent possible even when the family is no longer going to be living together in a single home.. A second benefit is self-determination. A resolution that the parties create for themselves with professional assistance, and that they therefore truly believe in, will be far more durable, far more satisfying, and far more tailored to their specific concerns and circumstances than a resolution imposed by a court, or even a resolution negotiated between two attorneys.

I practice family law in King and Snohomish Counties, focusing on divorce, parenting/custody, child support, spousal support, and the division of assets, including complex and high net worth estates.  I have done significant work in the preparation and litigation of Qualified Domestic Relations Orders (QDROs), including their enforcement and amendment.  I have done significant work on issues involving business interests, taxes, and retirement accounts, and my colleagues have turned to me to confer about the same.. I came to the family law arena reluctantly.  When I left law school 22 years ago, I swore I would never, ever, ever, ever do another dissolution.  Here, I am years later in a practice that deals with familys in every possible way.  In many ways, I am the only lawyer a person will have contact with in their lives.  I divorce them, do their pre-nuptial agreements, their annulments, their adoptions, their wills, thier probates.. At times it is a hard relationship.  I end up knowing more about people then anyone but then after lots of hard work together, I am satisfied in knowing I did the best I could to help them along to a new phase of life.. I feel it is important to take the long view.  Clients spend maybe a couple of years with their attorney but will be parents of the children forever.  It is important to handle matters in such a way as to protect the relationship so the children don't end up the real victims.
