I first became a lawyer because, as corny as it might seem, I was enthralled by watching Perry Mason when I was a young boy. The cool and calm demeanor he exhibited in any situation, his crafty cross examination of witnesses that somehow always led to a confession, and not to mention he won all his cases. While in law school, I volunteered at local legal clinics to help people with everyday legal issues they face, from workplace discrimination to holding a bad landlord accountable. It was during this time that I saw what power the law held to help people, to improve people's lives, and to be a "big stick" when necessary. This is one of the reasons I chose to represent people charged with crimes for a living, because so many of my clients are good people even if they made a mistake. And the U.S. Constitution requires that everyone accused of a crime be entitled to a zealous defense, someone to protect their rights and challenge the government's authority when necessary. This is why I do what I do.. As a former prosecuting attorney and Judge Pro Tem, I have the experience and knowledge needed to successfully represent those accused of crimes, whether it is assault, DUI, suspended license, theft, and all other criminal charges. I also handle hundreds of traffic citations a year with an extremely high success rate. I regularly attend and speak at seminars on trial advocacy, stay up to date on new developments in my field, and provide all the resources my clients need to get them through the process successfully. But I also take pride in my client service, keeping clients updated on their cases' progress and informed of all developments. I am also there 24 hours a day if my clients need a question answered or simply want to discuss their case.. Being charged with a crime can be stressful, emotionally and financially. If you find yourself in this situation, put me in your corner. You will be glad you did.
I firmly believe that a criminal defense attorney doesn't have to choose between being compassionate and being a vigilant & effective advocate. I prefer not to leave any stones unturned and am not concerned with questioning the status quo. The job in any given case that needs to be done is the job that will get done.
I fight hard to protect the rights of every single client. I believe that focusing on each client’s goals and listening to his or her story are central to achieving the best possible outcome. I take the time to get to know my clients and explain every step of the process they are facing.

I enjoy representing individuals and businesses involved in disputes. I work with my clients so I can understand the facts and advise them of their legal rights and risks. We work together to come up with a plan that makes economic and legal sense and then put that plan in place.. In 2002 Washington Law and Politics Magazine recognized me as a "Rising Star.". I counsel individuals and families on all aspects of estate planning, including estate and income tax minimization strategies, charitable giving, lifetime wealth transfers and gift tax matters, lifetime and testamentary trusts for unique beneficiary needs, and property agreements between spouses and partners.. I also routinely represent individual and corporate fiduciaries in trust administration and probate cases that present complex issues areas such as asset valuation, estate and income taxation, business concerns and sales, property ownership characterization, and commercial and residential real estate holdings.. Trust and estate matters sometimes involve disputes among various parties or necessitate corrective modifications. In such cases, I serve as legal counsel to beneficiaries or other parties involved in mediation or another dispute resolution process within which agreement is sought, often under Washington’s TEDRA (Trust and Estate Dispute Resolution Act) law. My practice also includes serving as a mediator for trust and estate litigation cases and as a facilitator for family meetings.
I consider myself lucky to have spent a career in a field to which I was attracted as a child, and which still provides me with plenty of reasons to look forward to going to work each day. Throughout my career, I have focused on representing individuals, rather than corporations. My clients have come from all walks of life, and all parts of the world. People of every personality type have walked through my door. I have represented both homeless people and corporate executives, proponents of civil disobedience as well as law enforcement officials. Despite their differences, the people I have represented have shared one thing in common: something to which they are entitled has been denied. Trying to restore what has been taken away from them keeps me motivated.. I have spent most of my life and all of my career in the Pacific Northwest, which I love. I was raised in various parts of Alaska and Washington, My first job was picking blueberries and raspberries in Whatcom County, just south of the Canadian border. Then, it was work in orchards in central Washington and construction in Southeast Alaska. In such work, I became familiar with what it’s like to put in a 12- or 14-hour day. Such work also taught me that I’m not all that good working with my hands, so I had best figure out something to do that didn’t require such skills. The law beckoned.. After law school, I went into private practice. I left Scott, Kinney, Fjelstad & Mack in 2016 after 25 years to start my own practice. Aside from having a difficult boss, I am liking the challenge and freedom a solo practice provides. I can take the cases I want to take, and pursue the causes I want to pursue. And, of equal importance, I don’t have to make any excuses to anyone if I want to take off to go flyfishing, and I can play a guitar in my office, if the mood were to strike. I would, however, need to shut the door. I do, of course, have neighbors.. After nearly 30 years of working as a lawyer, I understand that people aren’t coming to see me because all is right in their world. Rather, they need help trying to fix something that’s gone wrong, something that the law might remedy. I may not be able to fix all the problems that come to me, but I will bring the same client-centered approach to trying to fix such problems that guided me when I started in this profession.
I concentrate my practice on cross-border tax and business planning for U.S. and foreign entities. My practice also includes tax aspects of aircraft ownership, transactions and financing.
I came to the family law arena reluctantly. When I left law school 22 years ago, I swore I would never, ever, ever, ever do another dissolution. Here, I am years later in a practice that deals with familys in every possible way. In many ways, I am the only lawyer a person will have contact with in their lives. I divorce them, do their pre-nuptial agreements, their annulments, their adoptions, their wills, thier probates.. At times it is a hard relationship. I end up knowing more about people then anyone but then after lots of hard work together, I am satisfied in knowing I did the best I could to help them along to a new phase of life.. I feel it is important to take the long view. Clients spend maybe a couple of years with their attorney but will be parents of the children forever. It is important to handle matters in such a way as to protect the relationship so the children don't end up the real victims.
I bring enthusiasm, experience and compassion to my practice of family law. Because I recognize that I am entrusted with the most important aspects of one's life (children, assets, future plans, etc.) I advocate for each client based on their needs and their best interests and the best interests of their children. I am an aggressive advocate for my clients but also foster negotiation when it appears possible to reach an amicable settlement.
I believe in consistently providing superior, personal, and responsive service. My desire is to work closely with clients in order to thoroughly understand their objectives and goals so that I can help develop creative strategies to efficiently solve their problems and prevent additional problems from arising in the future.. My role is to alleviate the burden and stress that comes with litigation or other business issues in order to make it easier for my clients to focus on what is important to them. My practice centers on commercial litigation, as well as assisting companies with their day to day challenges.
I began my practice in insurance defense in 2010. My practice is devoted to civil litigation. My practice areas include first and third party insurance defense, coverage, premises liability, professional liability, and elder care. I am an active arbitrator in King, Pierce, Thurston, and Snohomish Counties.
I began my career as a criminal defense attorney. For 13 years, I defended people accused of felony and misdemeanor crimes, trying hundreds of cases and arguing before the court of appeals.. I then worked for 10 years in insurance companies and law firms, defending persons and companies in personal injury lawsuits. I represented clients in numerous arbitrations, mediations and negotiations, and had a stellar success rate at trial.. After gaining this experience, I wanted to return to a practice where I represented individuals seeking justice. For the past four years, I have focused my practice on representing injured individuals. The types of cases I have handled include motor vehicle accidents, assaults, skiing and bicycle accidents, slip and falls, wrongful death and civil rights violations.. I bring my knowledge of insurance company practices, my extensive trial and advocacy experience and my passion for justice to each case.. When I am not working, I enjoy hiking, biking and skiing and walking my dog. I have traveled to many countries and worked in a refugee camp.
