I'm a criminal defense attorney with over three decades of experience in the criminal justice system.. I'm a former Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney. After leaving the office in 1987 I have been practicing criminal defense for over 30 years.. I have the legal expertise and knowhow but most importantly have developed and nurtured lasting and positive relationships with my colleagues in the criminal justice system. These skills and relationships have been critical to obtaining the very best results for my clients.. I've handled well over 10,000 criminal cases in my career; everything from traffic tickets to murder cases.. I'm politically active throughout Los Angeles County and have been a pivotal supporter for candidates for various Los Angeles County Criminal Justice offices including the District Attorney the Sheriff's Department, the City Attorney, and a host of Superior Court judges and Commissioners.. I'm a founding member of the Honorable Benjamin Aranda III American Inn of Court established in 1994 and have been designated a Master Lawyer and "Lawyer Emeritus" by that organization.. I started the Law Office of James Dolenga over 25 years ago representing clients with severe physical and mental limitations that kept them from being able to work. Many had lost everything and had no where to turn. By helping to get them on Social Security disability and MediCare, I afforded them a chance to regain some financial stability and to get necessary medical treatment to regain some control over their lives. I soon realized that prior to their disability most of these clients had no plan to handle their affairs if they were hospitalized, unable to care for themselves or passed away. When I decided to add estate planning services I quickly realized the prices that were being charged for a basic plan to simply provide direction in the event of incapacity and to distribute property to children at death kept many people from doing this critical planning. I joined a national organiation that allowed me to provide the highest quality documents at a fair price. If more detailed planning is needed, my office can provide that as well.. I started the Law Office of James Dolenga to protect clients and their families in their times of need and that is what I still do today.

I returned to California in 1997 where I continue to represent employers of all sizes in virtually every type of industry including: utilities, banking, retail, trucking, healthcare, professional services, hospitality, and law enforcement. I serve as outside General Counsel to many of my clients where I assist with corporate governance, monitoring of litigation and risk management in addition to labor & employment matters.. I graduated from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles and have been a practicing attorney since 1991. Over half of my practice is devoted to estate planning, special needs trusts, conservatorships and elder care issues. I also have extensive experience representing neutral fiduciaries in contested matters. I have a passion for the disabled and disenfranchised, and I'm a dedicated to the caring and professional practice of law.
I graduated from Loyola Law School in 1995 and I have handled thousands of misdemeanor, felony, and juvenile cases. I have a proven track record of client satisfaction and winning the best results for my clients.
I began my career in criminal defense by being my Criminal Procedure professor's teaching assistant in law school. After graduating in 1997, I worked at an appellate firm in San Francisco while awaiting Bar results. At this firm, I worked on several appeals of clients facing the death penalty, and worked on the appeal for one of the Mendendez brothers. It was here I learned all about the appellate process, and loved it.. After passing the Bar (1st time), I went to the San Francisco Public Defender's Office as a certified/licensed intern, and started handling cases of my own. Before long I went to Humboldt County to work as a Deputy Public Defender, where I handled all manner of misdemeanors and felonies, in addition to juvenile and dependency cases. I then transferred to the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office, where I had a near-100% acquittal rate. I loved this position, and thoroughly learned the process and procedure in Los Angeles County Courts (as an aside, I would advise hiring a lawyer who has been either a District Attorney or a Public Defender, without question. Lawyers who go straight into private practice, in my experience, do not sufficiently know "the ropes," if you will).. I went into private practice after a number of years, and worked for the firm of Trutanich-Michel, where I specialized in firearm-related matters in both state and federal court. I also wrote several writs and appeals, and was a panel member for an MCLE educational seminar. My section was "Firearms: possession, use and the law.". Since then, I have ran my own law firm, and handled all manner of cases in Los Angeles, Orange, Santa Barbara, San Bernadino and Riverside counties. I take cases to trial more than any other private lawyer I know. This is because I charge very reasonable and fair rates and, most importantly, begin preparing a case a case for trial right from the outset. It is by preparing a case for trial that you are able to get the most beneficial plea agreements for your client, as you are then able to systematically point out the weaknesses in the case to the prosecutor or, as often happens, get positive results by trying the case before a jury.. I handle all manner of criminal cases, everything from a DUI and DMV proceedings to Murder. I also have had the opportunity to take many family law matters in recent years, and am proficient in that area as well. I give free consultations to all clients, so give us a call whenever you or a loved one need assistance. We are here to help!
