Though only licensed since 2016, I have had the pleasure of meeting with clients to discuss their estate planning and elder law needs for several years as a law clerk in an Estate Planning Law Firm with offices in Northwest Indiana, South Bend, and Lafayette.. My client-focused approach means I do not require clients to come to my office. I meet clients in their home, their advisor's office, or maybe even a coffee shop. I believe in a reasonable fee for services provided. Additionally, your fee will be based on what you need - not the value of your estate or what I think I could get you to pay. My fee schedule is available at our first meeting.. I have worked with dozens of clients, discussing their concerns, life changes, and family dynamics. I explained options for them to consider in simple, non-legalese terms.. One thing I have heard from so many people the last several years is that I do not come across as a "normal" attorney, because they can understand what I am talking about. I used to tell people that I was not an attorney (during my clerk-time) and I would strive to stay that way after being sworn-in.. Dozens of clients have specifically said to me that they appreciated my conversational style and ability to explain complex legal concepts in everyday terms. Additionally, they say that I truly listened to their concerns and then gave them options that address what they need.. Recently, during a meeting with the CFO of a local company with international distribution, he stopped in the middle of the conversation to say he appreciated that I spoke with him. He said more often than not, he feels like attorneys talk down to him.. I have more than thirty years of experience in the work-a-day world. I have worked in a large university in development; a small, local non-profit serving the homeless community; a Fortune 150 company in sales and sales management; and in radio -on-air, management, and sales.. The foundations of my style include serving clients, bringing out the best in people I work with, and keeping a broad view of even small matters. I believe that each citizen has a right to the full powers of the law, regardless of the fee paid. My fees are set as reasonable for the services provided - not on the pure value of assets or income.. I encourage you to schedule a time to meet. We can discuss your estate planning and elder law questions, review your current planning documents to make sure they still meet your current needs, and/or concerns you may have about parents or children's care. I believe in our Constitution, that all citizens have a right to access our court system and in our fundamental right to a trial by jury.. I help people who are the victims of serious errors access our court system to hold wrongdoers accountable and to help change unsafe conduct.
I have the best job in the world. Every day, I meet with wonderful people who love their families, and want to protect their loved ones, keep them out of court, save money, and make things easier for them in the future. Our estate plans enable our clients to help avoid unnecessary placement in nursing homes. This alone can save up to $7500 every month, while allowing the clients to preserve their privacy, dignity and quality of life by remaining in their own homes as long as possible. In the unlikely event that nursing home care IS required, our estate plans contain the tools necessary to do Medicaid Planning. Typically, this allows the client to qualify for medicaid much more quickly, without having to SPEND DOWN everything they have been working for their entire lives. All we do at Rice & Rice is estate planning, and we have been practicing law for almost 42 years.. I am extremely proud of the people who work together with us at Rice & Rice. One of our paralegals started working with us 40 years ago; another 38 years ago; another 27 years ago. All of these people have a wealth of experience, and have been doing primarily only estate planning for many decades.. I am also Co-Pastor at our local church, and we own and operate a Christian radio station which has been on the air 24 hours a day for the past 10 years.

I have also lectured on the subject of bankruptcy law at Valparaiso University School of Law. In addition, I have previously served as a deputy public defender in Porter County, Indiana, and have represented hundreds of clients in criminal proceedings.. I am a member of the Indiana State Bar Association, the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys and I currently serve as the Vice President for the Porter County Bar Association.. I am a life-long resident of Northwest Indiana and I attended Valparaiso University's Law School. I have been practicing law for 7 years and worked as a deputy prosecuting attorney before opening my law firm. That means I have a lot of courtroom experience and will be comfortable being Your Voice in court. I have practiced law in Lake County, Porter County, LaPorte County, Jasper County, Starke County & Tippecanoe County throughout my career.. The benefit of being a former deputy prosecuting attorney is that I have significant trial experience. In 2024 I went to trial on six (6) murder cases, as well as completed other trials in my career. This means I know how to present complex legal issues before a jury when representing my clients. This trial experience helps give me a competitive edge in negotiating cases on behalf of my clients - both criminal and personal injury cases. However, if we (my client and myself) do not believe negotiations are going the way we like, then we will go to trial to present the case we believe in to a jury and/or judge.. Every case is different. Every case deserves the highest level of due diligence. When I take on a new case, I review every piece of evidence so that I can give you informed legal advice. I also believe in a patient approach where I will take the time to answer all of your questions. My goal is to make sure you know how your case will impact your life, that means: Career impact, driving privileges, right to own a firearm, etc. We will decide how to proceed on your case as a team once we have gone over the facts and evidence of your case.
