I have been litigating cases for approximately 16 years.  My practice emphasizes litigation including personal injury, wrongful death, as well as insurance litigation and appellate work.   I have extensive experience in all aspects of litigation including discovery, motions, mediations, arbitrations, and trials, and I have handled hundreds of litigation matters.  On numerous occasions, I have secured results in excess of one million dollars for my clients.  I have also briefed and argued a number of cases before the Washington State appellate courts and have appeared as a guest speaker on trial and insurance topics.

I have been involved in criminal defense work for over twenty years, practicing first in New York City, then Bellingham and now Seattle. I have represented persons accused of all levels of crimes, with my representation primarily focused on felonies. I have worked both as trial counsel and in the appellate courts and have argued before the Washington State Supreme Court.. I have appeareed many times before the Washington State Legislature, where I have had the honor of helping pass several successful bills, including the decriminalization of part of the DWLS 3 statute, reducing the maximum sentence for a gross misdemeanor to 364 days and for requiring that youth sentenced in adult court be given the opportunity for release when serving excessive sentences.. I am also an adujnct professor at Seattle University School of Law, where I teach a course on criminal justice to law students working with prosecutors and defense attorneys.

I have always been an active and zealous advocate. As a member of the Moot Court board, I competed in the Boston area in Moot Court competitions. I explore all avenues for resolving issues but is not afraid to draw the hard line when necessary.. I was raised in a small town in New York, and obtained my bachelor’s degree in economics, at Keene State College a part of the University of New Hampshire system. I graduated Cum Laude from Roger Williams University School of Law in Rhode Island, and am a member of the Washington State Bar Association.

I have always been a passionate advocate for justice and protecting the rights of others. I was born in Managua, Nicaragua to parents who both fought against the Somoza Dictatorship during the Nicaraguan Revolution. I was then raised in Honduras until I was brought to the United States as a child. Later I graduated from Kenyon College in Gambier, OH with two degrees, one in Political Science and the other in International Studies.. At the beginning of 2006, I began working on immigration issues and was the program coordinator for Detention Watch Network under the then Executive Director, Andrea Black. While part of Detention Watch Network, I spearheaded the first national project dedicated to tracking the immigration raids led by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency and other enforcement strategies employed by the agency. This project titled, "Tracking ICE's Enforcement Agenda" was submitted as part of the briefing materials to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants in 2007 as part of the Detention and Deportation Working Group.. In law school, I became a member of the UNROW Human Rights Impact Litigation Clinic, part of the Washington School of Law from American University in Washington D.C. As a member of UNROW, I advocated in Federal Court against Michael Townley, a notorious torturer and assassin under the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile; and defended the rights of derivative U.S. citizens against unlawful discrimination and deportation by immigration officials in Federal and Immigration Court. While in law school, I also clerked at the American Civil Liberties Union's National Prison Project, and at Capital Area Immigrant Rights Coalition in Washington D.C. where I coordinated meetings and materials for the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights for their visit to U.S. immigration detention facilities.. After law school, I dedicated myself to advocating strongly for my clients in Immigration Court or in front of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service. I began practicing in New York, NY and later moved to Seattle, WA in 2013 to start my own firm until I met Guadalupe Cavazos at a free legal clinic hosted by the Mexican Embassy where we had both volunteered. I have a personal injury practice. Because I am an avid cyclist, the majority of my practice has been devoted to representing cyclists injured by negligent motorists, defective roads and defective equipment. I tried to lead the way as a real estate broker - but apparently I was a little ahead of my time.. But my law practice continues to thrive. Today, it is sole focus. These days that takes the form of FSBO or For Sale By Owner Sellers, and savvy buyers who use a lawyer instead of an agent to save a ton of money.. I grew up working in my family's construction company. I received by engineering training and Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy, West Point. After serving overseas for almost five years I came home to attend the University of Michigan Law School. I moved to Seattle in 1978 and started my practice, focusing almost exclusively on construction project issues. I became an construction arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association in 1980 and became a member of dispute resolution boards for large projects beginning in 1993. I now head the Kennewick, WA office of Schlemlein Goetz Fick & Scruggs, PLLC, continuing to focus my practice on construction project issues.

I grew up in Wilmington, Delaware, but I have lived in Seattle since 1989.  I graduated with honors from the University of Washington School of Law in 2000.  After a short clerkship in the Washington Court of Appeals, I joined Scott, Kinney & Mack, PLLC, and practiced there for fifteen years. In April 2016, I joined Emerald Law Group.. My primary practice areas are personal injury, primarily motor vehicle accidents, premises liability (slip-and-fall and trip-and-fall injuries), dog bites, and childhood sex abuse.  One of the things I most love about my job is getting to know all sorts of people and learning their stories.

I grew up in Tennessee and received my college and law school education at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.. From 1970 to 1974 I practiced with the Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps in Vietnam, Pearl Harbor, and other duty stations afloat and ashore.  Following my tour of duty, I became an associate with Mullavey, Prout in 1974.. My practice is predominantly personal injury trials, estate planning and probate, insurance, maritime and general litigation.  I have tried numerous jury and non-jury cases in state and federal courts.

I grew up in Michigan and knew I would go to law school after reading a biography of famous Chicago defense attorney Clarence Darrow. His stands for union workers, against the death penalty and his work on behalf of criminal defendants made him my hero.. After getting my undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan I went to law school at the University of Illinois. Following that I clerked for two different judges on the Illinois Supreme Court, Justice Stamos and Justice Miller, and learned a great deal of how the law works in real life.. I moved to Chicago, home of Clarence Darrow, and got my dream job--a public defender at the Cook County Public Defender's Office. I eventually tried over 50 jury cases, winning multiple cases from DUI's to drug, burglary, rape and murder trials. I was offered a position at a leading progressive law firm--People's Law Office-- that worked for innocent clients and sued the Chicago Police Department for false arrest, police brutality and wrongful convictions. I eventually made partner and was successful in getting an innocent client--Aaron Patterson--off death row after he was pardoned by Governor Ryan, following a successful appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court granting him a new hearing.. I was also able to free an innocent man from serving a 48 year prison sentence for a murder he did not commit by showing that he had been framed by a Chicago Police Officer.  His name was Rene Castillo and the case was People v. Castillo, 89 CR 2461.. In 2002 I moved to Seattle to take a job as an Assistant Federal Public Defender. I worked there for six years, winning a rape trial, and successfully getting a number of cases dismissed.. In 2008 I left the Federal Defender's Office to concentrate on my own practice in Federal Court, representing people in trials and appeals to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Since opening my own law firm I have had success in getting one federal charge dismissed completely (US v. Tho Le, CR12-00041RSL) as well as getting a number of charges reduced and sentences greatly lower then called for by the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.

I greatly enjoy helping my clients navigate their legal needs.  I make an effort to eduate people about their case and other legal matters as much as possible.  I am a big believer in educating people so that they are able to assist themselves and most importantly know their legal rights.. When I am not helping clients I enjoy spending time with my family and friends and participating in triathlons.

I greatly enjoy and cultivate a general business and personal injury practice, with long term client relationships going back to 1979, when I relocated from New York City to Seattle (where I am a native).  I purposefully maintain a small law firm practice, with an emphasis on providing excellent service, so that we can hopefully continue a mutually profitable relationship in the future.
