My life these days is largely centered around my work.  However, I have always been very active physically and remain in excellent physical condition notwithstanding my ever-expanding girth.  I ran and coached competitively for about 25 years and then switched over to bicycling, which I have done all my life. Every year I promise to drop some pounds so that I can get back to doing time trials.  In the meantime, I enjoy riding 4-6 days per week during the summer, with one long ride of 40-70 miles and the other rides 15-20 miles.  I also lift weights, and am much stronger now than I was when I had skinny runner arms in my twenties and thirties.. Other than work and exercise, I follow a lot of sports, mostly at the professional level, including MMA (big fan of Royce Graycie back in the day and Fedor Emelianenko), Nascar (Jeff Gordon although I think his winning may be in the past), MLB (excited about the Nats), NFL (Redskins, since I live here), NHL (Caps, for the same reason, plus they're good), Le Tour de France, and track and field.. Although I long ago gave up my intellectual pretensions, I spent  my younger adult years studying and teaching philosophy. In addition to Socrates and Plato, whom virtually all philosophy students in this country love, my favorite philosophers at the beginning of my studies were late nineteenth century Germans better known for their literary brilliance than their metaphysical prowess.  Thus in 1975, I published my first paper on Schopenhauer and wrote a master's thesis comparing Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Neitzsche with Sartor Resartus by Thomas Carlyle, who was not a German philosopher but wished that he were.. As I progressed in my academic studies, I moved towards a style of philosophy formerly known as the British analytical school (I don't know if the term still is used), although one of the central figures in this school was Ludwig Wittgenstein, who was every bit as strange as Neitzsche and Schopenhauer.. Before leaving academia, apparently for good, I completed my Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico with a dissertation that concerned "self-defeating" and "self-fulfilling" predictions in the social sciences.  This was more or less an interdisciplinary study in which I discussed certain theories of explaining social behavior then prevalent in sociology, psychology, economics, and sociobiology, none of which fields I have kept up with, since lawyers as a whole are rather anti-intellectual in nature.

Being charged with a criminal offense, however serious, can be one of the most stressful experiences in a person’s life. Aside from the obvious potential for incarceration and fines, a criminal conviction can have ripple effects in a person’s life, ranging from employment consequences to loss of the rights to vote and carry firearms.. Rob began honing his criminal advocacy skills before his first semester of law school, interning with the Office of the Public Defender. That training continued throughout law school, culminating in representing clients in the courtroom as soon as he was able with his third year practice certificate.. Following law school Rob worked at the Pulaski Office of the Public Defender, where he represented over 1,000 clients in just over three years on cases ranging from Trespassing to Aggravated Malicious Wounding. During that time he earned the respect of local judges and prosecutors while gaining the reputation of being a fierce, devoted, and compassionate advocate for his clients who was unafraid to take cases to trial. That willingness earned his clients numerous acquittals, including several by jury.. Rob continues to provide that zealous advocacy to clients now that he's in private practice at Robert L. Canard, PLLC.  When you select Rob to represent you, you can be certain that your rights will be exercised to the fullest and no stone will be left unturned.. Representative Cases:. -Acquittal by jury of Rape of an Incapacitated Victim where the Commonwealth’s Attorney was unable to prove that the Complaining Witness was under the influence of self-administered drugs. -Acquittal by jury of Malicious Wounding and Strangulation where the Complaining Witness changed his story between the initial report, preliminary hearing, and trial. -Acquittal by jury of Assault and Battery of a Law Enforcement where the evidence only supported that Defendant had accidentally fallen on the Officer. -Acquittal by jury of Simple Possession of Amphetamine where evidence tended to show that the Defendant had permission to pick up his girlfriend's prescription for Adderall.. -Acquittal by judge of Driving Under the Influence where the Officer was unable to testify to the results of the Field Sobriety Tests, other than that the Defendant had done “poorly”. -Acquittal by judge of Driving Under the Influence where the Officer failed to ask the Defendant when he had taken his medication, and left him unattended for thirty minutes. -Acquittal by judge of Driving Under the Influence where the client jumped out of the car and chugged and Ice House following the traffic stop. -Acquittal by judge of Indecent Exposure in the New River Valley Regional Jail where the Judge ruled that the Defendant had a reasonable expectation of privacy in the jail shower.. -Acquittal by judge of Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor where the Commonwealth’s Attorney failed to prove that the Defendant was over the age of 18.

I am an experienced criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor. Prior to joining the Law Offices of John Boneta, I worked as an Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney for the Loudoun County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office. Before my time with the Commonwealth I worked with John Boneta in Falls Church, gaining a wealth of experience in both trial and negotiation on both sides of the criminal bar. I graduated from Wake Forest University School of Law in 2016 for my Juris Doctorate and The College of William and Mary in 2012 with a Bachelor's Degree in American Studies. Prior to attending Wake Forest University School of Law for his Juris Doctorate, I worked as a legal assistant for Zoby, Broccoletti, & Normile, PC in Norfolk, VA. My work in Norfolk was directly under James Broccoletti, one of the pre-eminent criminal defense attorneys in the Commonwealth of Virginia, specializing in major felony cases.. While I was at Wake Forest, I was an active member of the executive board of the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund, with a personal emphasis on researching and becoming involved in the laws governing dog fighting and dangerous dog laws on the state and federal levels. This was a passion project for me, as my family has been very involved in animal welfare and animal charity my whole life, and it has been a pleasure to continue contributing to similar organizations as often as possible. I have taken pride throughout my career in being a zealous advocate for all of my clients, and helping them navigate the often perilous world of the court system. Those who know me will attest to my professionalism and preparation, and if you find yourself in legal trouble you will find yourself in good hands with me at your side.

I listen.  I call you back and make every effort to do so the same day.. Reliability and responsiveness are the tenets of my law practice.  If you’ve ever hired a lawyer, how many times did you find yourself waiting by the phone for that lawyer to call you back with an answer to a seemingly simple question?  A failure to communicate is too often associated with today’s legal profession.. Not in my office.. I am reliable and responsive because I understand why you hired me.  You need an advocate who will guide you through what might be one of the most difficult and agonizing experiences of your life.  You’re not just a “client file” here.  I’m passionate about helping my clients through the legal process.  Achieving a positive outcome in your case is my priority.. I achieve results because I’m disciplined.  The military forged self-discipline into my character.  I served nine years and two combat tours as an active duty US Army officer.  Then I joined the Reserves and settled down in Syracuse to be near family.. You should know that about me, too.  Family is important and my law office puts families and people first.. In the Army, I was a prosecutor and spent years in the courtroom honing my advocacy skills.  I advised commanders and leaders in combat on the legal parameters of warfare.  I defended Soldiers accused of serious criminal offenses on appeal.  Here in Syracuse, I put the same level of commitment into my law practice.  I look forward to working for you. I am also a Partner of The New York Traffic Ticket Lawyers, which is specialized in defending clients who have been accused of traffic infractions, from simple traffic tickets to DWI or Reckless Driving.. Reliable. Responsive. Results.  Call me today and I’ll prove it.
