Having spent over 25 years in the courtrooms across the Front Range, I am a tenacious advocate with a proven trial record. However, I realize that many times negotiating the best plea agreement does not result from threats of motions and/or trial, but understanding the prosecutor, the law, and thoroughly investigating the facts of the case. I also spend alot of time with each client making sure they understand how the law applies to their case and what their options are at each stage of the proceeding. Only then can my clients make a truly informed and knowledgable decision of how to best proceed with their case. That's what sets my firm apart - the ability to communicate to our clients in understandable terms the judicial process, how the law applies to their case, and the risks, consequences, and benefits associated with each step along the way. And if a trial is necessary, we have the experience, skill, and tenacity to fight for our clients before a jury and win! Give me a call and let's talk about how my firm can help in your case.
I was born in Syracuse, New York; lived in Florida, Labrador, Nebraska and grew up in Michigan. I went to the University of Michigan and graduated with a double degree in English and Oral Interpretation. I was in the Michigan Men’s Glee Club when we won an international choral competition in Wales. I played trumpet in the Michigan Marching band and traveled to an Orange Bowl and the Rose Bowl. I marched in the Rose Parade. I graduated with a Juris Doctor from the Detroit College of Law in 1982.. The last two years of Law School I worked full time clerking at a law firm in Detroit and went to school full time at night. I passed the Bar in Michigan on the first try and worked for a medium sized firm in Detroit. My major job at the firm was putting all of our estate planning into this new device called a computer. I wanted to move from Detroit and picked the best place in the country to live. I came to Colorado and passed this bar exam also on the first try. I have been running my office since May 1983.. As a young lawyer I joined the Chapter 7 panel of Trustees for the Colorado Bankruptcy court. I held dockets once or twice a month in Denver as Trustee. Along with the computerized estate planning I started to represent people in Criminal Court. I mentored with a County Court Judge and found that I was very good at dealing with Misdemeanors and especially the DUI cases.. These three areas of law have been my concentration since the very beginning.. On a personal level: I met my wife here in Boulder and we have two brilliant children. Our daughter Elizabeth is a Junior in College and plans to go to medical school. Our son is a Senior at Boulder High and plans to start at a business school in the fall 2016. I am the Scoutmaster for Troop 77 in Boulder. I am an Eagle Scout and so is my son. My daughter also reached the highest rank in Girl Scouts, the Gold award.. My name is Clay Shipp, and I am a DUI Attorney practicing in the western slope of Colorado. I grew up in the mountains; I attended Aspen Elementary, Middle, and High School. I received my undergraduate from the University of Colorado and my Juris Doctorate from Roger Williams in New England. I returned to the valley not only to raise my family in this beautiful part of the world, but to work with my father and develop our relationship on a professional level.. Growing up with a lawyer father, from an early age I was used as a springboard for testing creative ideas and analyzing theories for challenging cases. This developed my passion for the interpretation of the law and inadvertently conditioned me to be an attorney. I have been an advocate in family courts, a prosecutor, and now with my broadened perspective of the fluidity of the law, I have earned great achievements defending criminal cases.. I tackle cases with the same work ethic and endurance that I developed as a decathlete running track and field. I flourish in a competitive environment and welcome the challenges of trial as a test of merit and hard work. I sharpen my skills once a year at cutting-edge workshops at Harvard University Law School with some of the brightest and most aggressive DUI defense attorneys in the nation. You probably want to know a bit about me before you decide who is going to help decide your future. In the beginning, I pushed the envelope on almost everything. Then I turned 6. Oh, maybe 17. The truth is I continue to explore new boundaries because solutions are often found in uncharted zones. I just stay within the areas that are ethical now. Before 17, I'm not sure I understood the reasons for many of the boundaries, but luckily I discovered them in time to pursue my lifelong ambition to discuss and argue with purpose, while challenging norms and preconceived notions, as well as battling for equality.. I strive for balance in working hard and also playing equally hard by skiing, biking, hiking, swimming, scuba diving, challenging ocean waves, running, and golfing among other pursuits. I'm not done, and probably never will be done changing our lives for the better by redefining right and what is thought of as wrong. Nor am I done loving the warmth of the sun in the winter and the coolness of the breeze in the summer. Or a judge who listens well, asking me a relevent question of my client's situation.. I have always worked and strived for my clients, and would love you giving me the opportunity to solve your legal problem.

I am a true believer and knew since I was fourteen years old that I wanted to be a criminal defense attorney. I believe that the American Justice system is the best in the world - mainly because it allows defense attorneys such lattitude to establish reasonable doubt. I have handled thousands of criminal cases over the past 10 years and have conducted hundreds of preliminary hearings as well as countless motions and other sorts of litigation. I belive that the only way to practice criminal defense is to be "in the trenches" with my client.
