I spent 15 years as a very aggressive civil litigator before finding a calling in family law.    For the first 5 years doing divorce cases, I often fought hard in and out of court for my clients, because we both believed that served them best.    As I've matured in life and in practice (I'm a divorced dad myself), I learned how conflict and aggressive court actions often heighten bad feelings, and block both realistic resolution and healing.. I served as a Small Claims Judge Pro Tempore from 2012 to 2018. I performed this service 2-3 times per month in the Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County Justice Courts. I have practiced in the areas of family law, Hague Convention child abduction cases, criminal defense, tax controversies, and bankruptcy during the course of my career. I have tried hundreds of cases to verdict, and am a very experienced trial and appellate lawyer.. I keep abreast of changes in the law by attending continuing legal education courses inall four areas of law on a regular basis. I have approximately 20 published appellate opinioins, have petitioned the United States Supreme Court for the issuance of a writ of certiorari seven times, and have argued before the U.S. Tenth Circuit in Denver six times.. Regarding tax law, I worked for the IRS for approximately ten years either as a Revenue Officer, a Congressional Liaison, or as an Assistant District Counsel. I have reviewed several offers in compromise, reviewed IRS audits, and represented IRS before the US Tax Court. Jake Cowdin grew up in Utah and obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Weber State University. After receiving his Bachelor’s Degree, Jake moved to Nevada where he attended the University of Nevada Las Vegas, William S. Boyd School of Law. Jake went on to earn his Juris Doctorate, graduating in December 2013. Jake worked for The Aiello Law Firm for a full year during law school. Jake received a CALI Award in Business Law and managed to complete law school in two and a half years.. After receiving his Juris Doctorate, Jake returned to Utah where he began working for Arnold, Wadsworth & Coggins as a law clerk. Jake passed the Bar Exam and practiced law as an attorney with Arnold, Wadsworth & Coggins before joining Cordell & Cordell. Jake now owns and practices law as a partner to Cowdin & Gatewood, LLC. Jake enjoys being the courtroom, he is an excellent researcher and writer, and is a knowledgeable and aggressive advocate for his clients. Jake focuses primarily on the areas of Divorce, Child Custody/Paternity, Child Support, Protective Orders, Enforcement Actions, and Modifications.
