(1965-1966). He then served as a United States Army Captain assigned to the Judge Advocate General Corps. for the period 1966 - 1971; handling over 200 military trials.. Eileen M. Coughlan Avila’s practice of law began in 1982, when she did general litigation and managed case litigation for the federal government.  After the birth of her son in 1993, Eileen decided to devote her practice solely to family law.  She became a certified family law practitioner through the California Board of Legal Specialization in 2001.  Her practice is 100% devoted to family law and mediation.. Although her family law practice was first devoted to litigation and uncontested cases, over time Eileen has devoted more of her practice to mediation and negotiation.  She is a certified mediator through the University of California Extension Program.  In recent years, she has also been extensively trained in collaborative law and makes use of this training whenever possible in her cases.. Born and raised in Morro Bay, California, I attended college in the Midwest (University of Chicago - B.A. June 1996) and law school in the Rocky Mountains (University of Denver - J.D. May 1999).  I obtained my Colorado license and practiced briefly at a medium-sized litigation firm in Denver before returning to practice in my home state of California in 2000.. I believe my clients are entitled to a lawyer who can call upon extensive trial experience to assess how their case will be received during a trial, arbitration, or mediated settlement.  From the first day of my practice I focused on courtroom and trial advocacy.  I have attended several hundreds of hearings before courts, arbitrators, and governmental agencies.  Of those, nearly 100 were contested hearings and trials involving live witness testimony.  As a result, I have developed the deep background necessary to help you make the best decision possible in your dispute.. I have been married over half my life and I have five children, so I can relate to individual situations with job, kids, and family, on a personal level.  When I'm not working, I coach children's sports, help with their activities, swim, practice yoga, waterski, attend my church, and I will go to just about any baseball game I can find.
