I currently focus my practice in the areas of Estate Planning, including wills, trusts, durable powers of attorney, and advanced health care directives; Estate Administration, including probate, trust administration, and trust litigation; Property Law, including property tax reassessment and exemption issues; Contracts; and Business and Corporate law. I joined a boutique Santa Barbara law firm in 2005, while studying estate planning at UC Santa Barbara’s paralegal program, and continued studying law at Santa Barbara College of Law while working as a paralegal. I graduated from Santa Barbara College of Law in December of 2011 earning a specialization in business law. After being admitted to the bar in 2012, I focused my practice in estate planning and administration issues.. I grew up in Germany where I studied law and graduated in 1988. After passing the German bar examination, I moved to California where I attended law school at night while working full-time at the court where I gained valuable practical experience. After passing the California Bar exam, I worked as a research attorney and later practiced family law until moving to the Sacramento area in 2001. I decided to become a real estate broker and have been an active broker since early 2002.. These days, my primary practice area is estate planning. I enjoy helping people and appreciate the opportunity of being in the creation phase and finding suitable solutions for my clients.

Our practice is:. (i)     40% estate tax planning;. (ii)    40% asset protection planning; and. (iii)   20% income tax planning.. Estate tax planning is different than "estate planning": estate planning determines "who gets what".  By contrast, estate TAX planning determines the value of what is passed to your heirs.  In estate tax planning we use the tools Congress has provided - family limited partnerships, GRATs (grantor retained annuity trusts), private annuities, SCINs (self-canceling installment notes), qualified personal residence trusts, etc - to pass value on to the heirs at reduced value.. In income tax planning we use the tools which Congress has provided - retirement plans and charitable structures - to reduce income taxes, provide for retirement and support worthy causes.. Note that the same structures used for tax planning also have creditor protection benefits. For example, a qualified personal residence trust reduces the value of the principal residence for estate tax purposes; it also reduces the attractiveness of the equity in your home to a future creditor.. Our practice is primarily based on referrals from CPAs, secondarily from other lawyers, financial planners and clients.
