I have always had an affinity for the immigrant experience. I'm sure it stemmed from the fact that I am a first-generation American and often heard stories of how my parents came to the United States. I saw, firsthand, the joys and struggles of my uncles, aunts, and cousins as they crossed over and adjusted to their new lives.. When the Bosnian crisis blew up, I was at the forefront, making calls, writing letters to legislators and volunteering my time at the first-ever Bosnian Refugee Center. My passion ignited, and I know this is what I wanted to do. I visited Pakistan and volunteered in Afghan refugee camps and interviewed trafficking victims at the International Human Rights Institute. I researched, learned from the best and persevered.. Like all good stories. my path was circuitous. I graduated from law school and instead of pursuing immigration law, I joined an estate planning law firm. I wanted to develop a good base outside of my comfort zone and still have time to pursue international human rights. I did both, even though they seemed to be polar opposites of each other. Now, my estate planning background has sustained my desire to help people. I counsel families on how best to protect their assets and provide for their beneficiaries.. And for my immigration clients, I advise them on the tremendous need for powers of attorneys and guardianship of minors in case they are ever removed from the United States. I do this while still advocating for them in removal cases, before ICE or USCIS and helping them gain the legal status they deserve.. I love speaking and writing about my fields of practice and consider it a privilege to learn from others while also empowering them to know their rights.. In November 2016, Mr. Haque won a settlement of $125,000 against Jefferson County, Montana on behalf of a Mexican immigrant who was sexually assaulted while in immigration custody in that facility.. Proficient in both Spanish and Haitian Creole, Mr. Garcia handled thousands of cases for Catholic Legal Services while supervising a legal team of attorneys and paralegals from 2006 – 2014.  Mr. Garcia is admitted to practice law in the State of Florida, in the Eleventh U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and in U.S. Immigration Court.. Mr. Garcia earned a B.A. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1997. He then worked as a social services provider and advocate with Native American youth in New Mexico and then as a community organizer and legislative advocate at the Human Services Coalition of Miami Dade County (Now Catalyst Miami). Mr. Garcia was a member of the inaugural class of the College of Law at Florida International University, where he graduated cum laude in 2005, and participated as a member of the Law Review. Callan served as the Managing Attorney of Catholic Legal Services (CLS) Miami office from 2006-2010, and most recently as the the Managing Attorney and Director for CLS in Broward County.
