Understanding Personal Injury Law

In the United States personal injury claims are governed by state tort law. Victims may pursue compensation through insurance claims or civil lawsuits. Lawyers investigate accidents gather medical records interview witnesses and negotiate with insurance companies. I started practicing law in 1992. I opened up my own practice immediately after graduating from law school and passing the bar exam. For the first two years I mostly did criminal defense. Then I started representing criminal defendants in civil matters: they had been held in jail too long, or beaten by the police. Then I began to represent people outside of the criminal law system injured in accidents -- primarily car accidents.. I liked doing that sort of work (personal injury or "PI" work). It tends to be less contentious and less stressful than some other areas, although no area of litigation is without its stressors, as conflict is inherent in the process.. When I cannot agree with the other side -- which is often, I am afraid -- I like to adhere to two concepts. The first is to disagree without being disagreeable. The second is to agree to disagree: stop trying to convince the other side that I am right and get the case before a judge or arbitrator to settle the matter.
Ron is a trial lawyer and the founder of Cheng Law LLC. His firm represents injured people throughout the state of Oregon. Before beginning his legal career, Ron was involved in public service; helping marginalized communities gain respect and dignity. As a result of his work with women rights, minority groups, and college students, Ron was presented with a leadership award by the local NAACP chapter. Considered one of the nation’s top client counselors by the Law Student Division of the American Bar Association, Ron now focuses his talent and passion on helping people who have been severely injured. Ron represents victims of drunk driving and those with devastating injuries from dental malpractice, pharmaceutical errors, and other life-changing events. Ron strongly believes that those who are catastrophically harmed deserve to have their dignity restored or compensated for – especially when their injuries are a result of corporate greed or reckless indifference to the poor, disabled, and other vulnerable populations. Ron continues to volunteer with students, minority groups, and tackles several pro bonoprojects a year to give back to the community. A frequent public speaker to various legal and non-legal organizations, Ron believes in raising strong leaders and lawyers to protect the vulnerable and make our society stronger. Ron was presented with Lewis & Clark Law School’s Mentor of the Year Award; presented with the Community Spirit Award at the Lewis & Clark Distinguished Alumni Dinner; and was further recognized by the Oregon State Bar ONLD with the Public Service Award.
I devote my practice to helping injured people and their familes with their personal injury or wrongful death claims. During my career I have successfully represented hundreds of victims in their claims against insurance companies or wrongdoers. I put my clients first and believe my representation should provide three primary benefits: 1) navigating the complicated and confusing world of insurance claims on your behalf; 2) placing you in the best possible position to focusing on recovering from your physical and emotional trauma; and 3) maximizing the compensation you receive from the wrongdoer or their insurance company.. Before rejoining the Rosenbaum Law Group as an attorney, I worked for six years as a paralegal at Rosenbaum Law Group. During that time I observed and recognized the powerful role lawyers can play in obtaining justice for people whose lives are turned upside down because of another person's negligence. I attended the Willamette University College of Law with the goal of becoming a lawyer who helps people, not corporations. At Willamette, I served as the Editor in Chief of the Willamette Law Review and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Because of the above, I possess a unique blend of legal, practical, and administrative experience that enables me to effectively represent my clients in their battle with insurance companies.
