Understanding Personal Injury Law

Personal injury law allows individuals who have been harmed because of another person's negligence to seek financial compensation. These cases arise when a person or business fails to act with reasonable care and another person suffers injury as a result. Personal injury attorneys represent accident victims and help them recover damages for medical bills lost wages and pain and suffering.

In the United States personal injury claims are governed by state tort law. Victims may pursue compensation through insurance claims or civil lawsuits. Lawyers investigate accidents gather medical records interview witnesses and negotiate with insurance companies. Because insurers often attempt to minimize payouts, legal representation can significantly improve the chances of obtaining fair compensation.

Serious injuries may lead to long term medical treatment disability or permanent changes in lifestyle. Lawyers help ensure compensation accounts for current and future medical costs rehabilitation and lost earning capacity.

Common Personal Injury Cases

  • Car and truck accidents
  • Slip and fall incidents
  • Workplace injuries
  • Defective products
  • Dog bites
  • Medical malpractice

Each type of case requires evidence such as accident reports photographs medical records and expert testimony.

When You Should Contact a Personal Injury Lawyer

Victims should consider contacting a lawyer when injuries require medical treatment or when insurance companies dispute liability. Legal advice is especially important when injuries cause long term disability or significant financial loss.

How the Legal Process Works

  1. Initial consultation and case evaluation
  2. Investigation and evidence gathering
  3. Insurance negotiations

I love what I do for a living.  My job gives me the opportunity to develop genuinely deep connections with my clients and coworkers.  We get to know each other very well and develop a sense of mutual respect.  This systems we employ and the culture we create sustains my office.  It also makes us highly effective at what we do.. My job also gives me a chance to have fun.  I love the competition that is a part of every case, the strategies and the gamesmanship.  I was very lucky to have worked with a creative and very bright lawyer when I started practicing, and his mantra was: “if you can’t have fun, what’s the point?”  Keeping calm in the process of trial or any court proceeding allows you to have fun, and it helps make the process more tolerable for all concerned – especially our clients.. My work also gives me a chance to help others while having fun.  I was lucky enough to have been in David Glover’s law school class, and David is one funny dude who happens to have his own radio talk show.  Some days, after long hours at my office surrounded by men and women in dark clothing, David invites me to do an “ask the lawyer” segment on the David Glover Show: .  Being in an environment filled with creative, funny people in bright clothing  is reason enough to appear on the show every time Dave invites me, but I really enjoy trying to help the listeners.  It is one simple way of helping the community and enjoying my time as an attorney.. Work also gives me the chance to give back to the community by supporting many charities – usually ones that are closely connected to the struggles of our clients.  For instance, we represented the family of a young man who was shot to death outside a nightclub at a prominent St. Louis landmark.  In the course of our work with the surviving family members, we were simply amazed by the sheer capacity for work, love and devotion the victim’s mother demonstrated.  As a single mother, she often worked two or more jobs and lived at or below the poverty line.  Her two boys went to school and grew up in a community that was filled with drugs, violence and family dysfunction.  Yet her strength of character guided those boys to become hard working, educated young men that were raising their own young families.  After the wrongful death case resolved, we donated money to a shelter for school age children that is known as a last stop before prison or death.  The young men and women who come out of this shelter often find themselves with a diploma in their hand, pride in their souls and a spring in their step because society didn’t give up on them.  By supporting the shelter, we felt as if we were helping others have the chance that our victim’s mother gave her son.

Firm: The Dixon Injury FIrm

The St Louis personal injury and accident lawyers at The Dixon Injury Firm believe in providing the most valuable legal services to Missouri residents: Grade-A Representation. Dixon Injury Law’s practice areas include personal injury law, product liability, car accident, and truck accident claims, workers compensation benefits, or other injury claims you or a family member may be facing. Between our resources and years of experience, The Dixon Injury Firm is prepared to represent you in your injury claim on the path to a successful recovery.. Message from the owner:. “I dedicate my practice to helping injury victims, as well as the families of those wrongfully killed, fight for the full reimbursement of their harms and losses. I have been blessed to walk beside injury victims from all walks of life and ensure they receive significant compensation for their loss, despite the efforts of the insurance industry to pay as little as possible.. I have seen almost every tactic in the book used by massive insurance corporations in their constant attempts to place profits over people. It is unfortunate that those injured through no fault of their own must again worry about protecting their personal injury case immediately after an accident. We fight to make sure your case is protected while you focus on your path to recovery.. As an aggressive Trial Lawyer, I have gained the experience necessary to hold those responsible for their actions accountable. It is disturbing to me that the insurance industry has the public scared of making claims in fear of increased insurance premiums. Insurance is not something designed to allow insurance companies to make billion dollar profits while hard working people make timely monthly payments. Insurance is a contract that is paid for in order to help out when unforeseen circumstances happen. Don’t be bullied into settling for less than a full recovery.. After an accident, injury victims are often faced with growing medical expenses, lost wages, future medical treatment, out of pocket expenses and numerous other accident-related damages. While injury victims are stuck in the hospital or without transportation, the insurance company is busy gathering evidence which is favorable to their side of the case. It is important that personal injury victims have someone in their corner gathering evidence on their behalf. Those injured by another should immediately consult with an accident lawyer to make sure they are informed of their legal rights.. As an injury lawyer, there is no upfront fee to hire us to fight for you. We work on a contingent fee contract, meaning we are only paid if we win. There is also no cost to speak to me after an accident, so enjoy our free consultation and make sure your case is protected. I am here to serve and truly enjoy helping the injured.”

I have been in the legal field for over 27 years & have been a trial lawyer since 1999. I began in a prosecuting attorney's office and now have my own practice where I practice personal injury, worker's compensation, family law, criminal law, and many other areas of litigation. After three years with a well-known plaintiff's car accident injury firm, I took a job at a big defense firm. I have had judge and jury trials in personal injury and criminal cases. No matter the case, I prepare to win at trial. Whether it is a bike, car, or truck accident, a faulty product, divorce, nursing home negligence, trucking accident, complex multi-party arbitration, or employment discrimination case, I have handled them all to success. I have tried worker's compensation cases for employees and employers, like Harrah's Casino & some major airlines. For a decade, I have tried DWIs, Petitions For Review of license revocations, and criminal matters of various kinds, and am particularly successful in obtaining early dismissals at preliminary hearings.. I opened my own firm in 2011, relying on referrals from former clients and colleagues who respected my passion and skill as a trial lawyer. Today, most of my new clients come from pleased former clients. I have a general litigation-based firm.. Why hire me as lawyer? Here are some representative verdicts and settlements:. This does not include the many acquittals and dismissals, and other favorable results obtained in criminal cases like DWIs, assaults, property damage, burglary, stealing, gun charges, high-speed tickets, and run-of-the-mill tickets.. Local Counsel on Walter Huggins v. Fed Ex Ground, et al. which was a personal injury case in federal court in St. Louis, Missouri. Won $1,050,.. Trial Counsel on railroad crossing collision case representing truck driver and trucking company against Union Pacific railroad. Won $600, plus verdict after two week trial in St. Louis City.. One of the earliest cases I took on in my new practice was a medical malpractice wrongful death case that settled a few years later for $4.6 Million dollars.  That was the largest med mal settlement in Missouri for 2007.  Since then my practice has continued to grow with a primary focus of serious personal injury cases, however, I never overlook the small cases, I still enjoy those cases just as much and love getting great results for my clients.. I was born in St Louis and grew up here and graduated in the  top 10% of my class at SLU Law School in 2002.  I spent a few years at large lawfirms learning the ropes, getting courtroom and trial experience, and defending large corporations and insurance companies.  My experiences at these defense firms was invaluable and I enjoyed my time there, however, my heart just was not in it as I am a Plaintiff's lawyer to my very core.  I prefer the role of Matt Damon in the movie the Rainmaker as opposed to Jon Voight's character.. In 2004 I started the St Louis Personal Injury Lawfirm of Sansone Law, llc.  Within the first year I began getting excellent results for my clients and absolutely love what I do and take enourmous pride in being the best trial lawyer I can become.
