Can my old workplace tell people why i was fired
employment attorney Nevada Aug 11, 2026
Location: Nevada I am currently in between jobs, looking for a new one. I have been applying to jobs, and have gotten a few interviews, yet no offers yet. One of the places I applied to is where one of my childhood friends work. The other day we were talking and I mentioned being a bit down about not being able to find a job yet. That I've applied to quite literally everywhere with a for hire sign that I can work at, and haven't been offered a job. He told me that its probably because my old boss is telling those who call that I was fired because I was creating a hostile work enviroment. I've stopped using them as a reference, and havent teally seen anything saying its not legal, but that feels wrong. Can they tell them that? Is that legal? I thought they could only say whether or not they would hire you back? If this is actively harming my job hunt, is there anything I can do other then not having my old job as a reference? (Edited only because i accidentallt hit the post button before I was ready to.)
