What are my rights?
landlord tenant attorney Tennessee Aug 16, 2026
Hey, y'all. Location: north of Nashville, Tennessee, United States. I am so sorry if I do this wrong. Please help if I do, I am very stupid. Background: I will summarize this as best I can. But I will try to give information too, because I am disabled and can't quite tell what's relevant legally. In February of this year, I was assured I did not need section 8 housing by my landlord, my grandfather (89 years), because I would inherit the house I was living in and could stay indefinitely. My mother was supposed to inherit the house, as she was the original owner and only lost it because of my father (age unknown), who is abusive and caused the loss of the house. My father was not allowed to contact us and violated the order of protection multiple times. (This was years back. This part definitely matters, but he never got in trouble for violating the OOP. But there was an order, officialy.) A month or so later, Grandfather fell in his condo and broke his ankle. He stayed in a rehab place for several months and is now residing in a nursing home. This means he can not afford to keep the house and is selling it. Grandfather has not communicated with me directly about any of this. I first heard from my aunt (age unknown? 50s? 60s?) about the intention to sell in late April, through Facebook Messenger. I was given no dates. I became extremely unwell (on Disability/SSDI & SSI and am expected to lose everything I own, including pets), and as a result she stopped talking to me directly. At least I think that's why she did, I'm honestly not sure. This is important because they, my aunt and grandfather, are now using my father -- who everyone was previously no-contact with -- to communicate to me. My father is known for being abusive, lying constantly, and threatening to break into my house multiple times (once through text, which I screenshotted). I have severe PTSD from his treatment growing up. I keep getting conflicting information as a result. For months, my father has changed up what's going on with the house multiple times a day. This is just the surface level stuff, but I think it's the most important. Current issue: My father claims he needs to be at the house on Monday with a realtor. I don't know if that's true. I don't know what my rights are. My grandfather's daughter, my aunt, is the one who's supposed to be dealing with his estates. I'm kept in the dark about a lot, but will try to edit in more information if I have it and it's needed. He told me today (Saturday , August 15th) that he will need to be there on Monday (Aug. 16) and has claimed first that he has a say in when a walk-through happens, and also that there's no way to rearrange this date. He also both claims to have keys to get in, and to need me to give him my keys. I am deeply confused and just want to know what my legal rights are. Do I have to let someone in who previously kept threatening to come in to take stuff out of the house? Extra info: Dad was a hoarder. I spent 20 years cleaning it and spent a lot of money doing so, and it's still awful. Not sure if this is helpful to know? Adding it in because he keeps saying there's stuff he wants to take that my mom "wouldn't let him" (not true but how he words it) Thanks for any info. Sorry if this post is bad. Edit to add: is it okay legally to allow the realtor in to be helpful to my grandfather, assuming there is a realtor and that part was true, and make him stand outside?
