Dealing with subrogation firm debt collections after accident as uninsured driver

Debt Collection Washington Aug 26, 2026
Location: Washington state, USA Let me start by explaining my situation and my current understanding of my options. At this point I'm 90% sure I need a lawyer, but my first concern and the main reason of this post is I need someone with legal expertise in this area to review my debt validation letter before i send it to make sure it is adequate. And to make sure i am sending it to the correct address and department. The goal here being to stall their collection efforts while I search for a lawyer and give them time to negotiate. My main hurdle right now is finding one to represent me that I can afford and/or is willing to work with me on paying them over time. At the end of May I was involved in a car accident where I was at fault. All things considered it was relatively minor and could have been much worse. It the time I only had my permit, and was uninsured, and was driving alone. I have since obtained my full license and the required insurance and the large ticket has been reduced to an amount within my means to pay. My issue lies with the insurance company of the other driver. My understanding is that it is normal for an insurance company to refer the claim against an uninsured driver straight to subrogation if the damages are found to be over 1000$. I was unaware of this before receiving a call from a collection company named SubroIQ. Before being contacted by them the other drivers insurance, Liberty Mutual, sent me a letter saying the claim had been finalized for a little over 4000$ in damages. But upon speaking with SubroIQ I am informed the claim had been increased to over 5000$, the difference caused by the price of the car they rented during repairs. Upon questioning them further I found out that a medical claim was still pending and that the other drivers insurance had retained a lawyer. They also informed me they had sent the claim to the state DOL to request the suspension of my license already, on the same day they contacted me. As of now I have received no notice of suspension from the DOL, which I understand I will have 60 days to dispute from when it is sent, if it is sent. I have no experience with anything like this so I tried to negotiate payments I could afford, the lowest they were willing to go is 500$ down-payment plus 150$ a month. I am unable to pull together 500$ for a down-payment by myself until the end of October, I could do 150$ a month, but they said it required a down payment and the payments couldn't go beyond 3 years. I told them I would have to contact them back later. At this point i started asking friends and family for advice and if they could loan me the 500$, I quickly got the picture I should retain a lawyer, and not accept a payment plan while the medical is still pending. My own research after has confirmed this if im interpreting everything correctly. I now understand a subrogation firm uses high pressure tactics to try to get you to agree to a high payment plan you can't afford. The fact i have not received a notice of suspension yet despite it being 2 weeks has me suspecting they did not actually send it despite claiming they did. I also know that the payments can go beyond 3 years they only refused to do so. However the statute of limitations here for them to collect is 3 years, so the agreement must happen before then but may extend beyond. I am also now aware that if I agree to a payment plan now, with the medical pending I could be agreeing to pay whatever medical expenses they claim for as long into the future as they want in an ever expanding price tag, or other agreements that could force me into bankruptcy, which im trying to avoid. So as I stated before my goal now is to stall them until I can get the money I need together and find a lawyer to negotiate a global settlement that includes a set amount on the pending medical claim that absolves me of all liability when paid in full and cant be added to. The itemized list from the debt validation will also keep them from lying about what I owe which I understand these places sometimes inflate with amounts that were never paid out. Here is the text of my debt validation letter. I had AI write this for me which is the main reason i want it reviewed by a peofessional before sending it: "SUBJECT: DEMAND FOR DEBT VALIDATION / DISPUTE OF DEBT Reference: Liberty Mutual Insurance Claim ## To Whom It May Concern: I am writing to you in response to the missed call from your agency on August 13, 2026, and our subsequent phone conversation on August 19, 2026, regarding a subrogation claim stemming from an accident that occurred in May 2026 (Liberty Mutual Insurance Claim ##). Pursuant to my rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), 15 U.S.C. ยง 1692g, I am formally disputing this debt and requesting full validation of the amount you are attempting to collect. During our conversation on August 19, 2026, your representative stated that the claim amount had increased to over $5,000 to include rental car fees, and additionally stated that further medical expenses are "pending" and unfinalized. Because the total amount is unverified, subject to change, and lacks transparency, I am demanding an itemized breakdown of all alleged damages. Please provide the following: A complete, itemized accounting of the original property damage claim ($4,132.37). Copies of all invoices and receipts validating the added rental car expenses. A complete, itemized breakdown of all medical billing codes, provider invoices, and final costs that you claim I owe. Proof that you are licensed to collect debts in the State of Washington. A copy of any judgment or legally binding agreement establishing my liability for these specific, unfinalized amounts. Furthermore, your representative informed me that SubroIQ has submitted, or intends to submit, paperwork to the Washington State Department of Licensing to suspend my driver's license. Please be advised that leveraging state administrative actions to coerce payment on an unverified, disputed debt with pending, unfinalized medical costs may constitute a violation of consumer protection laws. Until you provide the requested validation documents, I demand that you cease all collection activities. Additionally, going forward, I request that all communications regarding this matter be made in writing only to the address provided at the top of this letter. Do not contact me by telephone. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. Sincerely," SubroIQ has only contacted me by phone and I have no other point of contact, I assume partially to make it difficult to do what I am doing now. The address I can find to send the letter is: SubroIQ 420 Rouser Road, Building 3, Suite 300 Coraopolis, PA 15108 If anyone can confirm this is where i should send it it would be appreciated. If you are licensed to practice law in the state of Washington and/or have experience with these types of cases and wish to offer me longer term advice or are willing to represent me in the negotiations feel free to DM me. We can discuss details and my finances and ability to pay more fully there, and I will of course have to verify the authenticity of your credentials and who you claim to be for my own protection before any money is exchanged. Thank-you for any advice and help in this matter
