US State and Federal Statutes

Real, official statute text for all 50 states, DC, Puerto Rico, and the federal government — free to read, sourced directly from each government's own publisher.

Every state legislature (and Congress) writes its laws into a "code" — a large, organized collection of statutes grouped by subject, like family law, criminal law, or business law. That text is public record, but it's rarely easy to actually find and read. This section makes it browsable: pick a state below, then a code, then a section, to see the exact text currently in force, with a plain-English note on what that code generally covers and a link back to the government page it came from.

Not legal advice. This page reproduces the official text of a government statute for reference only. Laws change, and how a statute applies depends on your specific facts. For advice about your situation, consult a licensed attorney in your state.
About this page: Statute text is reproduced from official government publishers via the Open US Law dataset (Vaquill AI, snapshot v2026.08, CC BY 4.0). Primary legislative text like this is public domain under the government-edicts doctrine (Georgia v. Public.Resource.Org, 2020). We link every section back to its official source so you can verify it independently.
