Can I be held liable if someone else broke my lease?

Location: Indiana but currently reside in Illinois. Four years ago I ended up in the mental hospital and while I was in there my mom supposedly broke my lease. She had no POA or legal authority over me. I tried calling once I got out to reverse the decision but they said the apartment had already been cleaned out and it was too late. Now I have collections after me looking for the remaining amount of the lease and I’m wondering how I can be held liable for a lease I did not break myself. I was also to my knowledge, never served eviction papers or given an eviction court date but since it’s on my credit renters consider it an eviction.
