Non-compete stating we have to pay attorney fees if we sue

LOCATION: Maryland My ex work friends told me that just had to sign a new non-compete stating what the title says. I was wondering if this is normal and/or legal? I’m scared that the company might be preparing to sell and this is a way to save their ass from a mass layoff.
