Kind of shady termination?

Wrongful Termination Florida Jul 24, 2026
Location: Florida So, I live in the state of Florida. I was employed at a Walgreens for just under a year, first job. Two days ago, i'm working an extra shift 12-5pm. I hear over our theatro system that someone from asset protection is in the store, but not much else so I don't think much of it. Sometime later, my store manager comes looking for me. We walk towards the back office, and by this point I'm kind of under the impression that this is a "everyone is meeting with this guy" kind of thing. My shift lead was also walking with us and my store manager had asked her if she had already met the asset protection guy, so I was going in thinking it was a quick "Hey don't rob us" thing. We go in, he gives me this whole shpeal about who he is and what he does. Then he asks me why he watched me on camera alter the price of beer for a customer. This had happened some time ago (about a month) so I didn't really remember all the details right then and there. But now that I've had time to think about it, I recall what happened. A regular had come in, a guy we all know by name. I particularly always delt with him because I also speak Spanish fluently. That day he had bought two cans of beer but I rung it up as four by accident. So about a day or two pass and he comes back in with his recipt and shows me I overcharged him. I verify the date, and I saw with my own eyes he had only bought two. So I tell him to just get two more and I'll ring him up for 10c. It was later on in the night, and it was maybe three or two people in the store including myself and my shift lead. You cant return beer as per store policy anyway so I didn't bother her about it. Now, I tell all of this to the asset protection man, and he nods. Then, he asks me if there any other times that I think ive caused a loss for Walgreens. Im under the impression still that this is a kind of "What are some common mistakes you think you've made so we can work on how to fix them" type thing. And obviously I cant just say "Nothing" so I just pull something out my ass and say "Maybe sometimes ive rung up a customer too fast and missed an item." He nods again. Then, and this is where it became shady for me even right then and there– he asks me how much "being fair to myself" I think I've cost walgreens in total. I again, have no clue what this is about so I pull something out my ass again cause I cant just say nothing. So I just say 50$. He nods again and asks if id be willing to pay it back. I say yes because its not like I can really say no in that situation. He then asks me to write everything I just said down. My store manager and he leaves the room, so I write everything down. Then, I leave the room (I was supposed to be on my 15 anyway) to go buy some chips. They hunt me down and bring me back to the room where he reads it over and nods. Then, my store manager reads it over. A second passes and she says there's zero tolerance for loss and that they have to let me go. She said it so fast and with no emotion that I thought she was joking for a moment. But no, they had me sign a few things, and had me leave. I did clock out before I left though. Im not sure if this was just kind of an asshole move on their part or something actually kind of shady. I can understand the whole beer thing because I didnt report it to anyone, but what about when he asked me to estimate what I'd cost them? If I were to say 20 or even nothing, would I have to pay them 20$? Or would I have kept my job? I went in that room completely blind, no one told me absolutely anything, much less that I was being terminated.
