Two week gas leak from company causing health concerns

Location: Utah About two weeks ago, my husband and I had a new HVAC system installed by a national company. The installation cost just over $18,000. This morning we woke up without air conditioning. After running errands, we came home and I was immediately hit with a strong natural gas smell. The odor seemed to be coming from the newly installed unit. I used a soap-and-water solution on the gas fittings and immediately saw bubbles forming, indicating a gas leak. I called the fire department. They shut off the gas to our home and detected elevated levels of natural gas throughout the house. After I repeatedly called the HVAC company, they finally sent a technician out. He told us the leak was caused by a fitting that hadn’t been tightened during the installation. He tightened it and continued with the rest of the service call. As a parent of two young children, this has been extremely upsetting. I understand that mistakes can happen, but a gas leak feels like a serious safety issue with potentially dangerous consequences. Over the past two weeks, I’ve also been dealing with some unusual health issues, including significant redness and swelling in one eye (my eye doctor wasn’t sure of the cause) and extreme fatigue. I have no way of knowing whether these symptoms are related to the gas leak, but the timing has me concerned. My questions are: Does the company’s admission that the fitting wasn’t tightened potentially create liability? Should I consult a personal injury attorney, even if I don’t yet know whether the gas exposure caused any medical issues? Are there any specific steps I should take now (documentation, inspection reports, preserving evidence, etc.) to protect myself if I decide to pursue legal action?
