Severing relationship with contractor in CA: do I need a lawyer?

Location: Nevada County, CA I signed a contract with a solar contractor in January who has since slowed his work almost to a standstill. He has admitted to me that he spent all the money I gave him already (I paid in full—terrible idea I know) and has no more at the moment to continue. He has completed probably half of the project. If I want to formally sever my relationship with him and demand the remainder of my money back, do I need a lawyer to draft that letter or can I do it myself? I don’t have his physical mailing address and he seems to be in temporary housing now anyway based on what he has told me. I don’t honestly expect the letter to have much impact either way, but I want to do things the “right” way so that I have proper legal standing to demand the remainder of my money back should I ever (somehow) have a chance to recover any of it.
