Employer made Last Working Day 1-Month after I quit

Location: Michigan So I was a purchase service employee at a company earlier this year when the company I was contracted to offered me a full time direct hire position. I sent a message to my boss at the contract company in mid-April stating that I had received a job offer from another company and would be pursuing it and my LWD would be 5/8. I also asked if there was anything else I needed to do to formalize this. I never got a response. On 5/8 I gave my boss at the company I was contracted to my laptop and on the following Monday I started as a direct hire. Then mid-May, I got another paycheck for my normal pay from the contract company. I didn't think anything of it since I was expecting about 2 weeks of pay for my final paycheck. Then at the beginning of June, I received another check for my standard pay. I reached out to my old boss and he told me I needed to log on to their system and submit a resignation there. I tried to do that but couldn't backdate it to 5/8, so I was told to just put it as that day (6/3). I did that and they withdrew one paycheck from my bank account. Then a couple days later I got another paycheck and a deposit for around 5k. I reached back out and they told me that was the money they withdrew prior and my last paycheck for the 6/3 end date. I've reached out to 3 separate HR departments, my old boss, and his supervisor. I keep getting told from payroll that they won't do anything and the other two HR teams say it is out of scope for them to fix a LWD and will not give me the name of someone who can fix that. In the end I have approx. 5k in my bank account that is overpayed and I am concerned that if they decide to get around to fixing this later it would be a big unexpected bill and it would have implications to my W4 and 401k. I know the money isn't mine but I don't know what to do to fix this. It almost stopped me from closing on a house because I couldn't explain why they kept paying me then wouldn't correct it. Can I legally force them to fix this so I can move on and stop blindly reaching out to people to try to fix this?
