Location: New York. Hello everyone, I have an ongoing criminal case currently and recently it has been another court date for me. I’m a college student and will be going back to school very soon, my next court date is during my school time. At my most recent court date, I asked my public defender if I’ll have to be there with them next time. They said if there is any difficulty with time to contact them, I told them that in earlier times when I tried to contact them through phone calls I didn’t receive any response, then they told me to contact them through texting. As soon as I checked on my schedule, I texted them in terms of messaging the phone number they left on their card that I wouldn’t be able to attend my next court date due to school reasons. It has been a day or two, and I haven’t gotten any responses back yet. They left two numbers, one for office and one for cell, in case, I messaged both. The message to the cell is colored blue and tells me that my message is delivered but not read yet. The office message is shown as green and doesn’t show whether or not it’s read or not. Is there anything I should do as of now or anything I could do? My next court date is approximately half a month from now.

I am an Asian international student living and studying in New York City, and I have never been to criminal court before. I am trying to understand what I should do next. A few days ago, I was stopped by an NYPD officer after entering the subway without successfully paying the fare. My Apple Pay transit payment was not working properly that day, and I also did not have my wallet or physical ID with me. I ended up entering behind my friend. My friend had successfully paid and has a payment record, but I did not. I was fully cooperative with the officer. I did not run, resist, or argue. I eventually showed her a photo of my ID on my phone, and she verified my information. The officer asked whether I had received a ticket before. I told her honestly that I had one prior public consumption of alcohol ticket from 2023. It was a $25 fine for drinking beer in a public park, which I paid online immediately. That is my only prior legal violation. The officer then issued me a Desk Appearance Ticket (DAT) for Transit Theft of Services and told me that I need to appear in Criminal Court. I was very surprised because I had never been to court before. I initially thought this was simply a fare-related fine. Location: New York Hey everyone, I really need some advice on this if you can help me. Earlier this year, I was viciously assaulted by my ex, where he had cut up my arm, and I called the police and filed an order of protection against him, which was granted. When the police came over, they took photographs of my injured arm, and they called the ambulance to treat me. I declined going to the hospital because I did not think that I needed to because I wasn’t sure what they could even do with these cuts because they were pretty deep but I figured they probably did not require stitches so I did not go to the hospital. Because I did not go to the hospital and get a doctors note, New York State literally charged my ex with attempted assault in the third- degree rather than actual assault – the police officer told me today that because I did not go to the hospital to get my injuries checked out, I can’t do anything about this and I can’t have him charged with assault. Furthermore, the ADA that was working on my case notified me about two days after his arrest, and never informed me that she could not press charges for assault because I had not gone to the damned ER, and instead had charges filed for attempted assault in the third degree; one of the glaring differences with these two charges is that assault is a…
