Daren was born in Provo, Utah. He attended Brigham Young University on a Presidential Scholarship and graduated from the University Honors Program, cum laude in 1991.. Daren majored in political science and was nominated as a Truman Scholar Nominee, a Scholastic All-American, Member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Society. While attending college, he was actively involved in a variety of intercollegiate organizations and community service activities.
