John L. John is a 1988 graduate of the University of Richmond School of Law where he served as an Associate Editor of the Law Review and was elected to the McNeill Law Honor Society. After law school, he served a one-year federal court judicial clerkship in the Eastern District of Virginia, Richmond Division. In the mid 1990s he closed his solo practice to join Encompass, a software development company based in Cary, North Carolina. Encompass was a joint venture between American Airlines and CSX and John served as the venture's Associate General Counsel until the partners decided to end the joint venture in the late 1990s.. Returning to Richmond, he joined an area law firm and ran their real estate department for two years. Since then, and prior to going out his own again, John worked in the Technology and Intellectual Property Group of Williams Mullen where he represented clients in matters of trademark registration, trademark infringement, software licensing, copyright infringement suits and related intellectual property matters.. When he left Williams Mullen, John joined a Williams Mullen client, . Shortly after joining homebytes as its twelfth employee, the company closed its first round of venture capital funding and quickly grew to nearly 150 employees. He was promoted to VP and General Counsel where he oversaw a four-person legal team and also managed several operational units totaling 60 persons. Homebytes, an online real estate brokerage firm, became the first and only company licensed as a real estate broker in all fifty states.. Since 2006 he has been in private practice focused on his current areas of practice.
