I am a Partner and Lead Trademark Prosecution attorney in the Virginia-based general practice firm of Dunlap Bennett & Ludwig PLLC. I have been representing a diverse group of businesses in a variety of industries and commercial sectors since 1995 while working in several intellectual property boutique law firms; consulting with the in-house trademark group of an international hospitality company; and examining trademark applications as an Attorney Advisor in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. My intellectual property practice also covers internet domain name IP issues; anti-counterfeiting matters; copyright prosecution; IP licensing and transactional matters; and IP research and due diligence investigations. I particularly enjoy working with new start-up companies and seeing them develop.. As an Attorney Advisor in Law Office 106 of the USPTO trademark examining operations for three years, Alex examined thousands of trademark applications in the fields of cosmetics, toiletries and cleaning preparations, publications and office supplies, toys and sporting goods, and service mark applications for all types of services, and defended registration refusals before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.. Professionally, Alex has been an active member of the International Trademark Association, participating in four of its committees for the past six consecutive committee terms (twelve years) as well as on the trademark committee of the American Intellectual Property Law Association.. I never planned on being a lawyer or an engineer for that matter. Out of High School, I joined the Air Force to seek adventure and found a good bit of it as a Pararescue candidate. Pararecuemen or PJs are USAF Special Forces combat paramedics, which like the SEALS operate in the SEA, Air and Land. During wartime, PJs may be sent over enemy lines to parachute in or via helicopter to recue downed pilots. During peacetime, PJs perform all forms of civilian air, sea and mountain rescue operations. Although I successfully completed the grueling Pararescue Indoctrination training and Army Airborne training, the stars were not aligned for me and I eventually washed out of the program during Army Special Forces Scuba School training and partly due to a medical injury. However, the lessons learned in the military and especially through the PJ training forged my never quit and always give 110% character for the rest of my life.. After a short military career, I decided to become an electrical engineer and eventually a patent attorney. I always say that I am an engineer first and an attorney second and this is due to my long career as an electrical engineer working in the industry on everything from missiles, to fighter aircraft, to state-of-the-art signal processing technologies. It took me a long time to admit that I am Geek, but as a summer associate at Nixon Peabody once pointed out -- you can’t spell beer without a double e!. I have many hobbies including martial arts, and I am currently studying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) with my sons Andi and Alex, ages 7 and 10. I love animals and our family also includes our cat Nelly and our Belgian Malinois puppy Max. I am a big video gamer and build my own custom gaming systems and always stay up to date with the latest games and gaming technologies. One game I especially like, Crysis has the most advanced gaming engine I have seen to date and can render virtual worlds with photorealism and real world physics that is second to none.. I am a dedicated family man, passionate about my work, and although I make myself available to my clients 24/7, my family always has and will always come first. My wife Barbara (or my better 3/4s as I call her) also is a practicing attorney at my firm and has a law degree from Germany and a PhD in law from the George Washington University. Needless to say, Barbara is the cornerstone of our family and I would not be complete or successful without her.. In closing and as in all of my e-mail signature lines--“as always please feel free to contact me at any time.”. Cheers!. Carlos

Joan’s practice concentrates on intellectual property transactions in the areas of entertainment, arts, publishing, music, internet, fashion and luxury goods law. Legal and business matters such as trademarks, domain name issues, business entity formation, standard releases, book publishing agreements, agency agreements, band collaboration agreements, and licensing are her specialties. Involved in the fashion and modeling industries for over twenty years, Joan knows the industry from the inside. She holds a certificate in Fashion Law from the Fashion Law Institute at Fordham Law. She developed the first Fashion Law CLE approved by the Virginia State Bar and has delivered presentations on the topic internationally. Joan’s experience as a licensed private investigator has proven valuable in assisting authorities in the removal of her client’s counterfeit goods from sites such as EBay. Her practice in this area complements the firm’s entertainment clients looking to launch and maintain their own fashion labels.. Joan regularly holds seminars with emerging designers, fashion models, and parents of burgeoning talent. She is an active member and supporter of the Model Alliance in New York City. Having a daughter who has been a model since she was two, Joan understand the concerns and frequently advises models and their parents of the issues involved in the industry. Joan was featured with her daughter as a guest on The Katie Couric show in 2014. The episode high-lighted the difficulties child fashion models encounter in the industry and the necessity of New York’s Child Model law and parental involvement in their children’s careers.. As a published writer herself, Joan has a unique perspective of the literary landscape. Her book, Feng Shui Love (Palari Publishing 2009, co-authored by Lisa Hyatt) hit the “chick-lit” world with complementary merchandise and design lines. Reviewers of the book include Cindy Williams of Laverne and Shirley, who noted “Feng Shui Love is a Fun Shui Read!” and Emyl Jenkins, author of The Big Steal, who added, “Stop rearranging your furniture and spend your time reading Feng Shui Love. Along the way you might learn a little about life its own self.” Additionally Joan was a columnist for Urge Magazine and a founding member of James River Writers, a central Virginia non-profit that builds community by inspiring and educating readers and writers.. Pro-bono service with the Virginia Bar Association’s Lawyers for the Arts Committee inspired Joan to develop a “Coffee with an Art Lawyer” program, which allows visual artists, musicians, authors, fashion designers and other artsy individuals a consultation at specified times in area coffee shops twice per month.. Prior to private practice, Joan served as law clerk to Senior Justice Harry L. Carrico of the Supreme Court of Virginia. She is an experienced mediator and has mediated numerous cases involving business and family matters. Joan’s diverse clients include fashion designers, authors, musicians, models, actors, actresses, inventors, photographers, event coordinators, tattoo artists, visual artists, jewelry designers, and specialty boutiques.
