John grew up in St. Pete Beach, Florida where his family has owned a greasy spoon diner since the early 1950s. He also played baseball at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL, where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration and Law & Justice.  John went on to graduate from Stetson University College of Law. During law school John was on the dean's list and was also a competitor on the Moot Court team.. After law school, John began work as a Staff Attorney at Gulfcoast Legal Services, Inc. in St. Petersburg, FL. He spent most of his time here handling advanced directives, landlord-tenant, and consumer issues. After a couple of years at Gulfcoast, John began work as an Assistant Public Defender for the 6th Judicial Circuit of Florida. Jennifer Stewart was born in Puyallup, Washington. She spent her youth in Thurston and Lewis Counties, except for a six month period when she lived in Chicago, Illinois, where, before moving back to the state of Washington, she was briefly a fan of Walter Payton, Jim McMahon and William "the Refrigerator" Perry. In the early 1990's, as a single mother, Jenn enrolled at Centralia Community College, then briefly transferred to Yakima Community College, before ultimately receiving her Associates of Arts Degree from Centralia. In 1996 she moved to the Seattle area and, in 1998, was admitted to the University of Washington.. During her years at the UW Jenn began working at Stewart Beall & MacNichols P.S., as a Law Clerk. John Merriam was an unlicensed seaman in the U. S. merchant marine for 12 years before becoming a lawyer, working his way through college and law school. He served aboard 17 freighters and tankers in 12 different job classifications for the deck, engine and steward departments.    Other employment included 19 full-time jobs in eight states ranging from carpenter to cab driver, from roustabout in the oil fields to factory hand on the line. John paid law school tuition with a scholarship from the Seafarers International Union.     Passing the bar in 1982, John practiced with a small firm through 1995 --- first as associate, then as partner. Cases handled ran the gamut of general practice with an emphasis on maritime personal injury.     In 1993-94 John was the Chairman of the Maritime Section for the Washington State Trial Lawyers Association.Starting his own firm in 1996, John now restricts his practice to representing seamen on wage and injury claims.
