N.Y. ACA Law § 57.53

§ 57.53. The Amistad commission; duties and responsibilities. The\nAmistad commission shall have the following responsibilities and duties:\n 1. to survey and catalog the extent and breadth of education\nconcerning the African slave trade, slavery in America, the vestiges of\nslavery in this country and the contributions of African-Americans to\nour society presently being incorporated into the curricula and\ntextbooks and taught in the school systems of the state; and, to\ninventory those African slave trade, American slavery, or relevant\nAfrican-American history memorials, exhibits and resources which should\nbe incorporated into courses of study at educational institutions and\nschools throughout the state.\n 2. to compile a roster of individual volunteers who are willing to\nshare their knowledge and experience in classrooms, seminars and\nworkshops with students and teachers on the subject of the African slave\ntrade, American slavery and the impact of slavery on our society today,\nand the contributions of African-Americans to our country;\n 3. to increase awareness and encourage school districts to utilize\ncurricula on African-American history by:\n (a) establishing and administering a program to publicly recognize\nschools that do an outstanding job teaching subjects related to the\nAfrican-American experience through a designation of special status or\nother award as determined by the commission; and\n (b) offering grants to individual teachers who demonstrate exemplary\npractices teaching subjects related to the African-American experience,\nas determined by the commission, and the commission shall catalog and\npublicize such practices for use by other teachers; and\n 4. to prepare reports for the governor and the legislature regarding\nits findings and recommendations on facilitating the inclusion of the\nAfrican slave trade, American slavery studies, African-American history\nand special programs in the educational system of the state.\n
