I was born on May 8, 1959. Before attending law school, I ran ski lifts, picked apples, painted houses, taught skiing, and worked as an adolescent and family counselor for a community action agency. I eventually went on to study law, graduating from Vermont Law School, summa cum laude (1st in my class) in 1990.After law school, I served as a law clerk at the Vermont Supreme Court. I entered private practice with a Burlington law firm in 1991, concentrating in professional malpractice cases, personal injury, and general litigation. In 1998, I decided to open my own solo practice, 100% dedicated to helping injured Vermonters, visitors, and their families in serious personal injury and wrongful death cases.. I am board-certified as a Civil Trial Specialist by the the National Board of Trial Advocacy.. In 2006, I was honored to be among 50 trial attorneys from around the United States selected to attend the intensive 22-day Trial Lawyers College, in Wyoming, founded by the legendary trial lawyer, Gerry Spence. In 2010, I served on the Faculty of the College.. Martindale-Hubbell, the oldest and perhaps most highly-recognized independent attorney review and rating service in the United States, has awarded me its highest rating, "AV - Preeminent.". From 2007 through 2014, I have been chosen by my peers to be included as a "Super Lawyer" in New England Super Lawyers Magazine.. From 2010 to 2011, I served as President of the Vermont Association for Justice (VTAJ). I am also a proud member of the American Association for Justice (AAJ), and serve on the Board of Governors of the Association. Many lawyers call themselves "litigators." But to a large degree, "litigation" consists of throwing lots of paper at the other side, but very rarely if ever taking a case to trial. I am proud to be a trial lawyer. I believe that when an attorney is ready and able to take a case to trial, the client is much more likely to get justice. Some personal injury lawyers have high-volume practices, advertising heavily on high-cost radio and TV ad campaigns. Some of these "settlement mills" take on hundreds of new cases each year, hoping to quickly settle as many cases as possible. I do not operate that way. I run a small, client-centered law practice, focusing on the individualized needs of a small number of clients. I advertise minimally, and take on only a few new cases each year. I limit the cases I handle to those involving serious, life-changing personal injuries, such as permanent back and neck injuries, fractures, burns, paralysis, disfigurement, or death.By keeping my overhead and case-volume low, I am able to handle each case personally from start to finish. I never pawn my clients off on a junior associate or paralegal. I work closely with each of my clients, to learn about their lives and to discover and tell the story behind their cases.
