He received the Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School in 1978, after graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1975 from Seattle Pacific University. He was Managing and Executive Editor of, and published an article in, The Harvard Journal on Legislation.. Mr. Sloat began practicing law with a prominent Los Angeles firm then known as Agnew, Miller & Carlson. He moved his practice to Pasadena in 1981, where he helped found a ten-attorney firm, becoming Managing Partner. His business experience includes commercial real estate brokerage, investment analysis for a real estate firm, and producing and distributing a motion picture. In 1986 he began his individual law practice..
