In 1994, I founded Amherst Mediation Services. My decision to offer mediation as an alternative to the traditional litigation system stemmed from my years of experience in the Probate and Family Court and in particular my concern that in many ways the court system was not the most efficient and best equipped system for handling family crisis such as divorce. Mediation offers participants more control over their own destiny and works to increase rather than discourage communication. Mediation is also far cheaper and often far quicker than traditional litigation. However, mediation is not appropriate in every situation. I continue to provide my clients with legal services. In my capacity as an attorney I provide services which are professional, courteous and sensitive to my clients' financial needs, emotional needs and family situation.. In my ongoing effort to provide my clients with the widest range possible of solutions that meets their needs, in 2004 began offering collaborative law as yet another alternative approach to resolving divorces and other domestic relations issues. In the collaborative law model, I represent my clients just as I would in the traditional litigation approach. The primary difference however is that both lawyers and both clients sign a contract that the matter will be handled without resorting to the courts to resolve disputes. If a client decides to utilize the courts during the divorce process, both attorneys must withdraw and both clients need to retain new attorneys.. I now focus my practice almost exclusivley on helping clients through mediation. I offer services througout Hampshire, Hampden, Franklin, Berkshire and Worcester counties including such towns as Amherst. Northampton. Springfield, Pittsfield and Worcester.
I grew up in Western New York, graduating from St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute in 2000. From there, I attended Colgate University and earned a B.A. in 2004.. After college, I spent two years at a large mortgage lender based in Western NY. I gained experience with numerous types of residential mortgage loans and learned a great deal about finance. This experience inspired me to seek a Master's of Business Administration and a Juris Doctor, which I earned from Valparaiso University in 2010.. After taking the New York State bar exam in 2010, I briefly clerked for a small boutique firm in downtown Buffalo, gaining experience with Federal criminal statutes and complex civil matters. I next took a job as a real estate paralegal with a large firm in downtown Buffalo. This job gave me significant experience with real estate, along with significant experience closing real estate transactions.. In late 2011, I opened my own firm. Since that time, I expanded my practice to handle a wide variety of matters, including real estate, landlord-tenant, estate planning, wills, guardianship matters, special needs planning, small business matters and estates, and other areas as well. I promise to give you practical advice, personalized service and zealous advocacy at a reasonable fee.. I am engaged with numerous local organizations, including the Erie County Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, and the Amherst Chamber of Commerce. I am also a parishioner at St. Joseph's University Parish in North Buffalo.
I became a lawyer, after a career as a writer, comedian and public speaker for a very simple and profound reason: I'd witnessed a hit and run drunk driver kill my pedestrian father.. My Dad and I stood only a few feet apart and I was fortunate not to be injured myself. Most of the story isn't appropriate for this type of site, but the part that does belong here is this: most of the lawyers my family dealt with in the aftermath were fine professionals, but they lacked passion, they lacked the patience my Deaf mother required and they lacked that basic humanness we all need when tragedy strikes. I became a lawyer to help people in their times of need in the way I wished we had been helped.. Am I perfect? Do I return every call immeadiately? Well, no, but I try to give every client something more than my legal expertise. I try to give them my humanity.. Lastly, whatever has happened to you, the courts will never give you closure, that comes from finding a way to live a fruitful life despite tragedy.
