Except for two military deployments to Iraq in 2005 and Afghanistan in 2011, I have lived in Austin, Texas since 1997.  A native of Virginia, I mostly lived in California, Japan, and Virginia after joining the Marine Corps before finally finding my home in Texas.. I earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame and a law degree from Saint Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio and I’m now a Family Law attorney working out of down town Austin, a block from the court house.. In the Marines, I served with an A-6 Intruder squadron as the maintenance control officer, and later did the same with F/A-18D Hornets.  I was the Adjutant for Officer Candidate’s school before leaving active duty to begin working as a manufacturing engineer for Apple Computer and Dell Computer.. When the recent war started up, I rejoined the Marine Reserves and served with a reconnaissance battalion and two different Marine Infantry battalions.   I’m currently serving as the Communications Officer for Combat Logistics Regiment 4 for a weekend each month and for two weeks in the summer.. I am married to a lady who hailed from Dallas, Elizabeth Rentner, and together we have one daughter, who has me completely wrapped around her little finger.  As it should be.

Everyone in my life knew that I was going to be a lawyer, even before I did. I was born and raised in Houston, Texas, but I spent my adolescence California dreaming. I’ve always loved music, and at the age of 10, I decided I was going to attend college at UCLA, move permanently to Los Angeles after graduation, and become a successful member of the Artists & Repertoire team at a major record label.Some of those dreams came true. I moved to Los Angeles when I was 18 to begin attending my dream school—UCLA—and absolutely loved my four years there. I graduated summa cum laude and was inducted into the Eta of Los Angeles chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. I was also able to intern at a record company while attending UCLA, and while that did allow me to meet the Backstreet Boys in person, it also made me realize that what I’d always thought was my calling actually wasn’t.After a lot of soul-searching, test preparation courses, and applications, I started law school at the University of Texas School of Law two and a half months after graduating from UCLA. I was involved in Texas Law Fellowships during my time at UT and helped raise money for classmates of mine that dedicated their summers to doing pro bono work. I was also a mentor through the Law Students Mentoring Undergraduates program and had the opportunity to study abroad in London during the fall semester of my third year.I received my license to practice law in Texas in November of 2016. Rickers graduated from the University of Texas School of Law in 2004 and began practicing law in the Rio Grande Valley.  She began her legal career handling probate cases and real estate matters, bringing water, wastewater, and clear title to substandard rural developments. These complex cases helped develop her creative and practical approach to solving difficult problems, working with government entities, elected officials, private landowners, and financing sources to achieve her clients’ goals.  Since then, her practice has expanded to include estate planning and administration, guardianships, and real estate litigation, as well as family law, where Emily found her experience with complex property matters valuable in resolving cases with significant community estates.
