Since he first began practicing law over fifteen years ago, Jason Carroll has focused his practice on protecting the rights of injured workers before the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission. Today, nearly one-hundred-percent of his practice is dedicated to representing injured workers. He has successfully litigated hundreds of cases involving back injuries, shoulder injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, repetitive trauma, and exposure. After graduation, he pursued and earned his Juris Doctor from Loyola University Chicago School of Law. Widuch, et al., 321 571, 747 N.E.2d 992 (1st Dist. 2001), Mr. Mertz again successfully appealed the dismissal the complaint in one of his cases by convincing the Illinois Appellate Court, First District, to reverse the lower court's ruling.

Since beginning in the practice of immigration law more than 30 years ago, the most important thing I have learned is to not predict or anticipate a negative outcome to a case.  I will not accept a legal matter that I think is frivolous or not supported by law, but there are many cases in which hard work, study of the law and creative advocacy can influence the interpretation of a difficult issue, or gain favorable exercise of discretion of an  immigration official or judge. As a colleague taught me a long time ago, if something is not prohibited, it is permitted.  Immigration lawyers occupy a peculiar space where, often, government practices are not policies, policies are not rules, rules are not law, and both rules and law seem to be dispensed with, with hardly a second thought.  We are persuasive advocates when we bring whatever authority we can muster to bear on a given situation.  The adjudicator or IJ will say, "what? there is a rule or a law to apply?"  And that can make all the difference in a given case.

Since 2013, my practice has focused on representing people who have suffered catastrophic injuries from defective medical devices, dangerous pharmaceuticals, medical malpractice, automobile crashes and slip and falls.  Prior to joining Meyers & Flowers, LLC in February 2013, I worked at a large South Carolina plaintiff’s firm, with a focus on asbestos-related multi-district litigation.  I also held an associate role at a small South Carolina personal injury law firm, where I litigated before the Social Security Administration and handled numerous workers’ compensation and personal injury cases.. I went to law school at DePaul University College of Law, where I focused my studies on litigation.  There, I received the CALI Award for Excellence in Trial Advocacy II, Evidence, Criminal Litigation Strategies, and Criminal Appeals Clinic.  I also spent extensive time volunteering, which earned me the Benjamin Hooks Service and Distinguished Public Service Awards.. During law school, I also gained trial and appellate experience while working with the Office of the State Appellate Defender and in the Felony Trial Division of the Cook County Public Defender.   At OSAD, I worked as a supervised, certified, senior law student and drafted an appeal to the First District Court of Appeals, sat second chair during oral arguments, and filed the petition for review with the Supreme Court of Illinois.  In my time with the Public Defender’s office, I honed my litigation skills by defending individuals accused of serious felony crimes.  I served as second chair in approximately twenty jury and bench trials and argued approximately twenty motions.. I am licensed to practice in Illinois and South Carolina jurisdictions and admitted in various federal courts throughout the country.  I earned my law degree in 2011 and his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of South Carolina in 2006..
