Step one is the creation of the candidate pool where lawyers enter the candidate pool by being formally nominated by a peer; identified by the research department in the "Star Search" process; or informally nominated.  The second step includes the evaluation of the lawyers in the candidate pool.  Rising Stars' research department evaluates each candidate based on these 12 indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement: verdicts and settlements; transactions; representative clients; experience; honors and awards; special licenses and certifications; position within law firm; bar and or other professional activity; pro bono and community service as a lawyer; scholarly lectures and writings; education and employment background; and other outstanding achievements.  These indicators are not treated equally; some have a higher maximum point value than others.  The final selection for the Rising Stars list is by grouping candidates into four firm-size categories.  Those with the highest point totals from each category are selected.

I have been practicing law since 1977.  I have specialized in family law since 1984.  I am the former chair of the Family Law Committee of the Monmouth Bar Association.  In 1992, I was asked by the Bar Association to revise the rules governing the Early Settlement Panel in the Monmouth vicinage of the Superior Court of NJ.  The rules I revised are still being used today.  I have litigated thousands of divorces, including but not limited to contested custody cases, domestic violence cases, and post-judgment applications to enforce and/or modify property settlement agreements.. Each client brings a distinct set of issues, needs and problems.  I do not believe that a client's needs can be met by characterizing such issues with generalities.  Rather, each need must be analyzed and a specific solution crafted to meet that need.  It is the easiest excuse in the world to blame inattentive Judges, difficult adversaries or vexatious litigants for bad results.  I believe a client is better represented with honesty from an attorney from the start of the case to its conclusion.

I have been handling medical malpractice and personal injury litigation for injured plaintiffs since first going into private practice in September 1988.  While I delved into many practice areas in my early years, since 2003, I have worked exclusivley on medical malpractice and plaintiff's personal injury litigation.. People come to me when they are hurting physically and emotionally because of someone else's misconduct.
