Early in his career he made a commitment to representing the less fortunate members of our community. James has also represented disabled children, indigent and homeless claimants, those applying for SSI and the mentally ill.. James received recognition in 1999, 2000 and 2001 when he was named a “Super Lawyer” by Law and Politics, Twin Cities Business Monthly and Minneapolis-St. Paul Magazine, a distinction fewer than 5% of all Minnesota attorneys receive. He was also recognized when named by his peers in these same publications in 2001 as a “Rising Star” in the legal profession.. James lives in Apple Valley, Minnesota with his wife Carol and daughter.

J.R. Maddox practices intellectual property and business law, focusing on the development and protection of intellectual property and other business assets through creative and efficient legal work. J.R. has litigation experience across all disciplines of intellectual property law including patent, trademark, copyright, false advertising, and trade secret. His experience ranges from successfully representing one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies in ANDA litigation, arising under the Hatch-Waxman Act, to successfully representing a celebrity inventor, patent holder and entrepreneur. J.R. also handles a variety of transactional matters related to intellectual property and corporate law. He advises one of North America’s largest food companies on forward-looking intellectual property issues, and has developed tools to guide product development and streamline in-house legal affairs. J.R.’s thorough understanding of technology, law, and business allows him to add real value to a client’s enterprise as well as provide clients with practical, cost effective legal solutions.

I received my law degree from Gonzaga University in 1978.  I was hired to teach at the law school for two years before joining Rider Bennett in 1980.  After practicing at Rider Bennett and Schwebel, Goetz & Sieben, Tewksbury & Kerfeld was formed in 1994. Our  firm’s goal is to provide individual service for our clients in an aggressive, efficient, and fair manner.  Our firm has adopted practices and procedures that are beneficial to our clients while focusing on individual attention for each client.. In addition to representing injured people, I am often hired to be an arbitrator or mediator to help resolve other lawyers’ cases.  In that capacity, I was appointed as Special Master by the Supreme Court to distribute the settlement proceeds from the I-35W bridge collapse case, and also served as Special Master for the Cottonwood bus crash and the YAZ/Yasmin birth control cases.. I have repeatedly been named a Super Laywer, has been named a Top 100 Trial Lawyer by the American Trial Lawyers Association, has been named a Best Lawyer by the Best Lawyers in America, was a Minnesota Lawyer of the Year for ADR in 2014 and Tewksbury & Kerfeld has been recognized by U.S. News and World Report as a top tier law firm.

I have helped parties resolve disputes through negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and litigation since 1980. I also serve as an administrative law judge.
