I've specialized in bankruptcy and foreclosure law my entire career, and helping consumers in financial difficulty is all that I do.
I was an associate City Attorney for the City of Kansas City for 17 years, now semi-retired, and I love working with my clients who are mostly small business people. I am a tax sale expert, I ran the Land Bank in Kansas City for the five years. Real Estate was my practice area for my whole career with the City.
I practiced in Phillipsburg, Kansas with my father until his death in 1988. I continue to maintain the Phillipsburg office, but my primary location is now Overland Park, Kansas. I have served on the Kansas Bar Association's Ethics and Grievance committee for many years. My practice is primarily in the areas of Estate Planning, Probate, Trusts, and Elder Law, but my western Kansas background has also given me significant experience in Agriculture and Oil and Gas.. Almost all Estate Planning is done on a flat fee basis. Fees for probate depend on state law and are subject to approval of the Court. Other services may be a flat fee or hourly, depending ont he type of service.. I serve on the Board of the Heartland Men's Chorus and I'm a member of the Leawood Rotary Club. I'm a past member of the Board of the Huck Boyd Foundation.
I obtained a Biology degree from the University of Kansas in 1998, and was awarded a Juris Doctor degree from Washburn University of Law in 2001.. Starting my career as assistant district attorney in Kansas City, I was primarily assigned to litigating child abuse and neglect cases. I have first-chaired over 20 jury trials since 2001 that involved either a homicide or high level sex offense.. In 2006 I formed Leiker Law Office P.A. to represent clients with various family law issues. Leiker Law Office, P.A. is a family law firm dedicated to providing the highest quality service and representation to clients seeking assistance with divorce, paternity, custody, domestic violence cases, and appeals.. I try to maintain a presence in criminal law even though our focus has been famly law since 2006. In 2013 I was appointed by the governor to sit on the Kansas State Board of Indigent Defense Services and the appointment was unanimously confirmed by the Kansas Senate (elected Board chairman in 2016). This Board generally oversees all of the public defender offices within the state, and the millions of dollars in state funding allocated to the same.
I love to help people who are in trouble. Having grown up with the business, my experience with people who need help far excceds my nine years as a practicing attorney. Initially working as a clerk when I was fourteen, I have learned about everything, and more importantly evreyone, that makes up the courts, prosecutor's offices, and law enforcement professionals involved with the criminal justice system. With the exception of school at Notre Dame and Saint Louis University, I am a lifelong resident of Johnson County, Kansas. The number one priority in my life is family, with whom I love to be outside, looking for fun and laughs, as much as possible.
I limit my practice to defense of criminal matters in the Municipal, State and Federal courts of Kansas and Missouri. Although I prefer to take cases to trial and prepare each and every case in my practice as though it were going to trial, I understand that every case and evey client is unique. Just as the facts of any given case may not be conducive to a favorable outcome at trial, each individual client will have different objectives and concerns with an evidentiary dispositon of their case as opposed to an agreed disposition or plea. I take my clients and their concerns very seriously and work together with each client to determine the best available disposition in every case.
I initially became interested in the field of Elder Law when my grandmother entered a nursing home while I was in law school. By living through the emotional and financial turmoil that every family experiences when a loved one goes through this stage of life, I learned first hand how a passionate, caring attorney can be a tremendous help. Through my practice of law, I strive to help families every day and uphold the dignity of my elder clients.
I have many years of litigation experience, giving me a high comfort level in the courtroom. Over my years of practice, I have found great value in mediation to resolve conflicts. Through the years I have been involved with mediation in general civil cases, in employment and in family disputes. I regularly volunteer to teach classes in conflict resolution for organizations.
I have extensive experience working in Kansas appellate courts, providing an in-depth understanding of the Kansas criminal justice system. I can use my knowledge and experience in the courts to put together a strong defense for any criminal charge you’re facing.
I have been privileged to practice law for over 25 years in Kansas and Missouri, including state and federal courts. I am a litigator with a focus on insurance defense, insurance coverage, indemnity disputes, and commercial litigation. I handle matters from intitial filings in a lawsuit to appeal in higher courts.
I have always enjoyed helping people solve problems. Because of that, I wanted a profession where I could focus on this desire to serve and be challenged intellectually at the same time. Law is the perfect intersection of these motivations.. By the time I completed my undergraduate degree from Central Christian College I knew I wanted to be a lawyer. I earned my Juris Doctorate from the University of Kansas School of Law in 2015. Following law school, I joined a mid-size firm representing business clients with breach of contract matters in Missouri and Kansas state courts. I am grateful for the valuable hearing and trial experience I gained during this time.. In April 2018, I decided to make a change to a smaller firm where I would have more opportunity to really get to know the people I'm representing, and in doing so be better able to help them. Working at Morefield Speicher Bachman, LC in construction and business law, I have the added bonus of getting to work with subcontractors and skilled laborers which takes me right back to my early days in McPherson.
I handle family law, probate and estate matters in Kansas and Missouri. My primary practice area is divorce. I am a trial attorney with an emphasis on crafting a resolution outside of the courtroom before putting the decision in the hands of a judge. But when push comes to shove I provide my clients with a competitive edge at trial. I have been selected as a Super Lawyers Rising Star – 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 & 2022; National Academy of Family Law Attorneys Top 10 Attorney Award – 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 & 2024; National Academy of Family Law Attorneys Top 10 Under 40 – 2015, 2016; I donate my time by serving as the Vice President of the board of directors for the Epilepsy Foundation of Missouri and Kansas.
I completed the NHTSA/IACP Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Practitioner Course taught by Walden, Platt & Associates in 2008. I am also a KCMBA Mentor Attorney in the area of criminal defense.
I chose the field of DUI defense for many reasons. I have a great deal of experience in all areas of the criminal law, and it is my opinion that more people are falsely accused of DUI than any other crime. Many Judges and jurors assume a person is impaired if he or she cannot walk perfectly heel-to-toe on a line or stand on one leg for thirty seconds. The fact is, most people cannot do these things after having nothing to drink. Try to do theses things in your living room, then imagine trying to do them on the side of a busy street after being pulled out of your car by a police officer. Additionally, I like the scientific aspects of this field, such as the effects of alcohol and drugs on the human body and the inability of breath testing machines to accurately measure a person's alcohol level.
I believe in delivering personal attention and outstanding service for each of my clients. While certainly important, the practice of criminal defense is more than simply filing the appropriate motions and handling the technical part of the legal craft.. Beyond that however, educating my clients is a fundamental part of my practice. Everyone deserves, and frankly, needs a clear understanding of what is happening with their case, and why, so that they can make educate, informed decisions about how they want to proceed with their case. To that end, you will discuss your case with me and will never be shunted to a paralegal or assistant.

I am an attorney in Overland Park. I focus my practice on helping people charged with committing crimes in Johnson County.
I am an attorney because I am passionate about the role of law in improving the individual and collective lives of the members of our society. With a law license, one has countless rights, and with them, serious responsibilities. So much of life's conflicts are due to the polarization of individuals--the focus on our differences: Christian or Muslim, Gay or Straight, Rich or Poor . . . the list goes on. Instead, the rule of law and its practice can soften those differences and instead, serve to focus on our commonalities--the things that unite us as people in this world.. The often combativeness of the practice of law can be intellectually stimulating and emotionally fulfilling--but the focus must be on the impact it has on the lives of our clients and those around us. This is where the ethics of each individual attorney must be be engaged and managed to serve our purpose in this role, rather than in feathering our individuals needs, legitimate or otherwise.. There is much wonderful about life in our world, yet there is so much pain and unfairness. Each of us much choose for ourselves whether we are going to contribute to the conflict, or to the solutions. The consideration of this opportunity is what I hope governs each decision I make each day.

Missouri – 2001. U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas. U.S. District Court of the Western District of Missouri. U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Missouri. U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, 10th Circuit and 8th Circuit. Personal. Daniel is married to an attorney and together they have two children that fill all of their non-billable hours with dance and music lessons or school projects. After visiting for the first time in 2010, he became enamored with the Hawaiian islands reading about the history of the people, culture, food and music – going so far as to introduce friends to the true joy of huli-huli chicken. In 2020, the pandemic meant that he took on the role of lead substitute-teacher for his children, not a natural role, but one he could take on from home and still manage his law practice with the many virtual office management tools he has used for years.. Goals. Private, solo, law practice has been a rewarding challenge, but also brought into greater focus the ways in which the practice of law is not typically designed for personal or family enrichment. Law firms, opposing counsel and courts often force contentious attorneys into untenable positions of choosing between family, personal or business enrichment, improving service, finding alternative dispute resolutions and zealous advocacy in court without much regard to the consequences. Daniel wants to build a law practice that radically improve the service and value to clients without compromising her personal goals around raising his children and being present for his family. He hopes to be in a position to “retire” or transition out of the courtroom by providing high-value services to clients in more creative ventures from a “remote” location somewhere in the Hawaiian islands where he would like to learn to carve tikis, speak the Hawaiian language and become involved with teaching tourists about local history.
