I enjoy developing large-scale strategies with a programmatic approach for corporate clients, as well as targeted solutions for individual employees. I also assist individuals in navigating the family-based immigration and naturalization processes. Although the immigration system is complex, I enjoy finding clear and straightforward ways of explaining the processes to my clients. It is incredibly rewarding to help companies fill critical roles and to help individuals achieve their dreams of living, working and reuniting their families in the U.S.
I have over 35 years of experience in real estate and finance law. I counsel real estate developers, investors, landlords, tenants and lenders in transactions involving all types of commercial real estate, including office buildings, hotels, shopping centers and multi-family projects.
I have had a diverse complex litigation practice for nearly three decades. The focus of my practice is representing public companies, directors and officers, board committees, major accounting firms, and underwriters in class action securities litigation, derivative litigation, internal investigations, and SEC investigations. I also have substantial experience in large contract disputes, including representation of the successful party in AAA arbitration with more than $1 billion in damages at stake. I have represented clients in the software, computer hardware, biotech, energy, telecom, retail, financial, hospitality, and professional services industries.
I have experience providing advice and representation in a full range of labor and employment matters, including collective bargaining, discipline and termination, union grievances, wage and hour compliance, unfair labor practice complaints, hiring, employment policies, and compliance with anti-discrimination laws. Prior to joining Summit, I worked as an assistant city attorney providing advice on a range of municipal legal matters, including the Public Records Act, municipal contracting, and other general municipal legal work. In addition, I went to high school in Portugal and speak fluent Portuguese.
I have dedicated my practice to fighting against insurance companies and corporations who would otherwise take advantage of everyday, hard-working people. After graduating from law school, I worked at several personal injury firms and also gained experience working on behalf of a large insurance company. I brought this background to Emerald Law Group and now dedicate my services to personal injury victims in the hopes of balancing the playing field. We also represent consumers who are fighting with their own insurance company after their claims are denied.
I have closed up this practice because I moved to Seattle and have joined the King County Department of Public Defense.
I have been representing clients in employment and labor matters for over 30 years, including litigation. In addition to my base of employee and union clients, I have represented several joint employee-employer trusts regulated by ERISA. I also provide proactive labor and employment counseling to employers.. I am an MIT graduate and received my law degree from New York University Law School. I began my legal career with the National Labor Relations Board, and served as an attorney in the NLRB’s Washington D.C. and Seattle, Washington, offices from 1967 to 1974. I then went into private practice. In 1981 I co-founded the law firm that has become Frank Freed Subit & Thomas.. For over 25 years I have served on the planning committee of the Pacific Coast Labor and Employment Law Conference, which annually produces a nationally recognized two day seminar for labor and employment lawyers. I have also served as a mediator.. My approach to client representation is to find the correct mix of advice to the client, aggressive representation in presentations to the other side, and litigation that works for the case and the client.. I come from a family of lawyers, including my father, wife Kay, sister and brother-in-law. My two children, Jeremy and Mikaela, are not lawyers, although they are articulate and were argumentative at times when they were young.

I have been an attorney at HCMP since 1982, having arrived in Seattle from the boom town of Buffalo, N.Y., following law school and college on the east coast. As dictated by the then prevailing real estate environment, I spent my first seven years dealing primarily with workout and bankruptcy matters. As the real estate sector of the economy improved, I shifted to transactional work, mostly financing transactions and loan syndications. I have found that, working through some troubled times has given me a great perspective on what's really important when "push comes to shove" in a transaction and, with the recent turn in the economy, my early experience has been a true resource in handling the restructuring and workout of troubled loans and in advising clients in creating effective strategies for realizing on their security. I regularly advise our clients, including a number of financial institutions, in lending, real estate, and related debtor-creditor matters, and supervise attorneys and paralegals providing assistance in the full spectrum of financing and real estate-related areas.. In addition to almost 30 years of experience assisting our clients in addressing their legal concerns, I have spent considerable time working with industry and trade groups in ways that have helped me gain a broader perspective on the issues my clients face on a daily basis. Those in the lending industry have even shown enough confidence in my judgment to elect me President of the Seattle Mortgage Bankers Association and an Associate Director of the Washington Mortgage Lenders Association, and I continue to be involved with both organizations on an ongoing basis as Chair of their joint legal-legislative committee.
I have an extensive litigation practice, with an emphasis on employment claims involving race, sex, religion and disability discrimination claims, wrongful discharge, and failure to accommodate. I have also handled a variety of wage and hour matters, including wage and hour class actions. My practice also involves the business side of employment matters, and I have litigated trade secret and non-compete claims.. In addition to my litigation background, much of my practice is dedicated to advising clients on how to best train their managers and employees, and identifying and helping to resolve workplace concerns as they arise. This includes but is not limited to helping clients navigate the ever changing landscape of federal, state and local leave laws.. I have presented on these and many other topics to clients individually and at legal seminars. I have also authored articles on many of these topics. I grew up in Wilmington, Delaware, but I have lived in Seattle since 1989. I graduated with honors from the University of Washington School of Law in 2000. After a short clerkship in the Washington Court of Appeals, I joined Scott, Kinney & Mack, PLLC, and practiced there for fifteen years. In April 2016, I joined Emerald Law Group.. One of the things I most love about my job is getting to know all sorts of people and learning their stories.
I frequently come into my clients' lives when they are at the end of their rope. The resiliency of the human spirit never ceases to impress me.. I see my role as first, helping clients first to determine their priorities clearly, second, developing a plan to achieve as many priorities as possible, and third, implementing the plan, with modifications as required as the case progresses.. Most cases, family or otherwise, settle. I can do that. But the most skilled negotiator always needs to have a "BATNA": a Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement. For this reason, some cases go to trial. I can do that too.
I first became a lawyer because, as corny as it might seem, I was enthralled by watching Perry Mason when I was a young boy. The cool and calm demeanor he exhibited in any situation, his crafty cross examination of witnesses that somehow always led to a confession, and not to mention he won all his cases. While in law school, I volunteered at local legal clinics to help people with everyday legal issues they face, from workplace discrimination to holding a bad landlord accountable. It was during this time that I saw what power the law held to help people, to improve people's lives, and to be a "big stick" when necessary. This is one of the reasons I chose to represent people charged with crimes for a living, because so many of my clients are good people even if they made a mistake. And the U.S. Constitution requires that everyone accused of a crime be entitled to a zealous defense, someone to protect their rights and challenge the government's authority when necessary. This is why I do what I do.. As a former prosecuting attorney and Judge Pro Tem, I have the experience and knowledge needed to successfully represent those accused of crimes, whether it is assault, DUI, suspended license, theft, and all other criminal charges. I also handle hundreds of traffic citations a year with an extremely high success rate. I regularly attend and speak at seminars on trial advocacy, stay up to date on new developments in my field, and provide all the resources my clients need to get them through the process successfully. But I also take pride in my client service, keeping clients updated on their cases' progress and informed of all developments. I am also there 24 hours a day if my clients need a question answered or simply want to discuss their case.. Being charged with a crime can be stressful, emotionally and financially. If you find yourself in this situation, put me in your corner. You will be glad you did.
I enjoy working with individuals, families and business on all matters pertaining to immigration. I use my knowledge of economics, law, history and psychology to understand the legal, human and political contexts of each client’s legal problems.. I bring skill, energy, and passion to find solutions for people from different countries and cultural backgrounds to obtain legal status in the United States.. I work with clients on a variety of matters, including work, business and family visas; family petitions; adjustment of status; removal of conditions; naturalization; U visas; work permits; deferred action (DACA); R-1 religious worker visas; asylum petitions; and waivers.. My most common cases include obtaining legal residency “green cards” for family members, securing waivers for illegal presence, removal of spousal visa conditions after divorce, and deferred actions and temporary status based on humanitarian relief, among others.. I studied law and started my practice in Colombia, where I worked for seven years. I also earned a Masters in Business Administration to better assist companies of all sizes in their growth plans, which often include immigration issues.. I volunteer for the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Program and am a member of the National Women MBAs and the Latina Bar Association.. I am fluent in Spanish and English.
I enjoy trying cases for my clients in the commercial construction and real-estate industries. If you are interested in learning about how I may help you with a trial or arbitration, then please call me.
I enjoy helping clients navigate important life transitions with clarity and care, whether through estate planning, probate, or family law matters. My goal is always to guide my clients toward solutions that protect their emotional, financial, and psychological well-being.. My background in managing legal discovery and internal investigations for major organizations has given me a practical and detail-oriented approach, which I now bring to my work with individuals and families.. Outside of the office, I love running forest trails, diving into books and music, and spending time with family at game nights.
