Why I practice immigration law.. I am a first generation immigrant to the United States. I have experienced firsthand what my clients are going though as new arrivals in the U.S. I was born in Beirut, Lebanon, to a Lebanese father and a British mother. My father was with the Lebanese Foreign Service and my family moved to a new country approximately every 3-4 years, so I grew up living in different countries.. When I was about two months old, we moved to Brazil where I spent the first two years of my life. In fact, until the age of 8, I spoke both English and Portuguese. When I was two years old, my family moved to Detroit where I lived until the age of 8. This is where I learned how to speak English with an American accent. At the age of 8, my family moved back to Lebanon for three years. I learned how to speak Arabic here as I didn’t speak any when I arrived. Unfortunately, I forgot my Portuguese in the process. At the age of 11, just as the civil war was getting underway in Lebanon, we moved to Sydney, Australia, and lived there for four years. For the first time in my life my birthday was in the summer, so I had four years of birthday parties at the beach.. After Australia, my father was assigned to Islamabad, Pakistan. At that time, 1979, Islamabad was a brand new city and still quite empty. There were three lane roads extending in all directions and sometimes only a donkey cart to be seen traveling down the road. The entire city of Islamabad had only one movie theatre, which had two screens – one English and one Urdu.. During the four years that my family lived in Pakistan, I spent about two of those years back in Lebanon attending the same British school that I had as a child, finishing my last two years of high school there. The Lebanese Civil War was in full swing at this time and I spent many nights in a bomb shelter until eventually our apartment received a direct hit and was destroyed. It was time to move again.. When I graduated from high school, I moved back home to Pakistan for six months and served as my father’s secretary at the Lebanese Embassy. While back in Pakistan, some friends and I took a trip to India, where we visited Amritsar, New Delhi and Agra. I immediately fell in love with India.. At the age of 17, I returned to the United States for the first time since I’d left at age 8. I returned as an F-1 student and attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Eventually, I was sponsored for a green card and became a U.S. Permanent Resident and then a U.S. citizen.. Once I graduated from U of M, I sold all of my belongings and returned to India for six months. At that time, my father was serving as the Lebanese Ambassador to India and so I had a “home base” in New Delhi and was able to spend some time with my family before setting off with my backpack to travel around India and Nepal. Approximately 90% of all of my clients are from India and I have actually been to the home towns of many of my clients.. Following my travels through India and Nepal, I returned to the U.S. and became a Technical Writer for about 10 years, but attended Wayne State University Law School at night for the last 4 years. At the time, there was only one 2-credit course on immigration law that was offered at WSU. I took that class and realized that I wanted to practice immigration law. Upon graduating from WSU Law School, I began working for a large law firm that specialized in immigration law. In fact, it was the firm where my Immigration Law Professor was employed and we worked together for several years.. In 2010, following about 12 years of employment at this firm, I left to open my own law office. I have been practicing immigration law since January 1999.

Firm: HermizLaw

When we embarked on HermizLaw, our goal was to revolutionize the way everyday people received legal services. We started from scratch and built this firm with the client in mind.  Everything we do stems from that focus.. It’s simply not enough to say we’re different; it just wouldn’t do us any justice.  To learn what we’re all about, check out the foundational elements that highlight the essence of a HermizLaw attorney.. Only Excellence Will Do. Excellence [ek-suh-luhns] (noun): 1) The state of being outstanding or extremely good. 2) The quality of excelling or being exceptionally good that so surpasses normal standards; extreme greatness; superiority3) An action, characteristic, feature, etc, in which a person excels. It’s pretty self-explanatory.  We promise all this and more.. Client Focused. Without you, there is no us.  That’s why we have built HermizLaw on the founding principle that every client relationship is like a partnership.  We work together in an environment built on respect, trust and faith with open lines of communication and a free flow of ideas.  From the moment we meet until the point we close your case, every step has been formulated with you, the client, in mind.  We are committed to updating you frequently so that you will always know what stage your file is in, what to expect and everything in between.  Our mission is to deliver an experience that you will not find anywhere else.  We promise you won’t be disappointed.. We’re There With You, From A to Z. The legal system is complicated, stressful and hard to figure out.  You shouldn’t have to deal with any part of it alone.  At HermizLaw, we take pride in lessening the load off your shoulders and giving you the peace of mind you need to deal with the other things going on in your life.  Our attorneys are prepared to handle all aspects of your case so that you don’t have to.  But, just because are committed to take on your case doesn’t mean we exclude you from the process.  You will never feel like you are out of the loop.  We will work together with you, from A to Z to ensure the best possible outcome in your case.. We ALWAYS Return Phone Calls. All phone calls are returned within 24-hours.. Great People. A firm is only as good as its people: excellent people deliver excellent results.  It just so happens that people are our business.  Our people are passionate about delivering quality service, outstanding legal representation and achieving client satisfaction, along with everything in between.  At HermizLaw, everyone — from the support staff to the HermizLaw attorney — is committed to this standard.  We hand-pick our people to ensure you will like them as much as we like them.. Culture Driven. People are our business.  Everything we do relies on the cooperation of people. We know that you reap what you sow, and therefore are committed to creating the kind of environment that is conducive to excellent results.  At HermizLaw, we work together in a culture of mutual respect where we allow individuality to shine through and flourish.  Instead of asking our people to conform to one look or idea, we embrace the diversity in our people, because those differences will mean excellence over mediocrity.

Julie’s experience defending sexual assault claims in both criminal courts and university proceedings has served her clients well. She carefully considers when best to use certain litigation strategies and confidently presses her adversaries in order to exercise and protect her clients’ rights.. Julie’s trial results have earned the respect of the legal community, and she has attained significant victories in both state and federal court. Although she is a passionate trial attorney, some of her greatest victories are when trial or even criminal charges are avoided because of a dismissal of an indictment, a favorable plea bargain, or representation during a government investigation.. Julie always considers the entire impact a criminal case has on a client and often represents clients in collateral matters including the defense of a client’s professional license or litigation of parallel civil enforcement proceedings. Should an appeal be required in a client’s case, she is trained as a New York State Court of Appeals judicial clerk to draft and argue cases before state and federal appellate courts.. Julie understands the responsibility of providing high quality criminal defense to individuals who cannot afford an attorney by committing her services to several federal felony cases annually as a Criminal Justice Act (CJA) attorney with the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York. She has been selected by federal judges to serve as a committee member for the CJA panel for her local federal district court, which oversees all the district’s CJA attorneys.
