Michael Axt was born in Newark, New Jersey on July 20, 1945. After a judicial clerkship and more than three years with the New Jersey Public Defender’s Office in Newark, Michael relocated to Denver, Colorado. In 1974, he and two colleagues established The Office of the Federal Public Defender for the District of Colorado.
