After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin in 2002 with degrees in philosophy and government, Alison moved back to her hometown to attend St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. While attending at St. Mary’s she won numerous advocacy awards based on her oral argument skills. Several times in 2005 and 2006 she argued in front of the Texas Supreme Court as well as the Court of Criminal Appeals and in 2006 won first place in the Texas Young Lawyers Association Mock Trial in front of the Supreme Court of Texas. Alison also was elected and served as the Student Bar Association President from 2005-2006. The American Bar Association recognized her outstanding achievements with a scholarship at graduation.. Since graduating from St. Mary’s School of Law in 2006, Alison Hicks has practiced law in San Antonio for almost ten years. She was recognized by S.A. Scene Magazine in 2009 as a “Rising Star” in the San Antonio legal scene, just two years into her practice. Alison has been involved in a varied litigation practice including a vast amount of courtroom and trial work, as well as appeals, probate matters, criminal trials and even appealed cases to the Court of Appeals; and ultimately the Supreme Court of Texas.. For much of her career, there has been a focus on representing families in different legal capacities; such as private clients, as well as appointments by various Judges to serve as “amicus” or “friend” of the court to aid the court in making judgments. As a child of divorce herself, Alison draws on her experiences personally as a former child of a divorce and as a mother which aid her in advising clients and forming winning strategies.. In the beginning of her practice she worked for a local firm that focused on family law. Within the family law spectrum, she primarily represented fathers that desired to gain custody of their children. Alison has seen a dramatic shift in the court’s attitudes towards fathers in her almost ten years of practice. This extensive experience in the courtroom has given her the real world knowledge of what a client should expect based on the facts of their case. Since 2009 Alison has owned her own firm practicing all facets of family law issues, such as divorce, enforcement of property division, enforcement of child visitation and support, establishment of paternity, modification of custody and child support, grandparent's rights, termination & adoption, as well as premarital and post marital agreements. She also practices general civil litigation, such as probate and personal injury matters.. Alison continues to maintain close relationships with many of her past clients and enjoys seeing the families she has helped grow. She insists that her firm is dedicated to the efficient representation of clients. Alison Hicks & Associates, PLLC has become widely respected for their ability to match expertise to the needs of a diverse client base. Prior to becoming an attorney I worked for over 15 years as a Mental Health Therapist counseling youths and their families. I have an affinity for children and believe they have a voice that deserves to be heard. Navigating the legal system can be extremely difficult for adults and often anxiety provoking and confusing for children and adolescents. They are are asked to make decisions that will affect their life that require guidance.. Though I am a strong proponent of the institution of marriage I understand that sometimes divorce is the best solution. As divorce is often not amicable having someone to advocate on your behalf is often necessary and well-advised.

My litigation practice is focused in the areas of divorce and family law. I understand that divorce is one of the most stressful events a person will undergo during their lives. I am a member of the Fairfax and Loudoun County Bar Association and the Virginia State Bar. I also maintain the firm's blog: Virginia Family Law Resource ().. I currently serve as Chief of Stonewall Jackson Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department (SJVFD) in Manassas, Virignia. In addition I am a member of the Board of Directors and the Executive Board of the Prince William County Fire and Rescue Association. I am also chair of the Training Advisory Committee and member of the Uniform Rank Committee.. I work with clients throughout Northern Virginia. I am an attorney admitted to practice in all Federal and State Court's in Idaho since 1982, and I am also a member of the bar of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. I have practiced in small firms, mid-sized firms and as a solo practitioner in my 38 years of legal practice, and since 1982 I have practiced at one time or another in almost every area of law. I have successfully tried dozens of jury trials and hurndreds of court trials during my legal career. In 2016 I looked back over my last 20 years of practice and realized that I had made career decisions based upon circumstance and what others wanted, rather than practicing in the legal areas I enjoyed. I decided to return to my roots in the practice of law - family law, guardianships, probate, criminal defense and juvenile defense. In 2017, I opened Michael Doolittle PC in order to use of my life experience and my many years of experience to provide experienced, compassionate help to my clients in the most difficult times of their lives.
"There are no problems, only solutions." Let us help you find solutions. Although a hard hitting, and tough litigator, I am also compassionate and professional. We can help.
I was a newspaper reporter before attending law school, and in my practice I still like to write and meet a wide variety of people the way I did when I reported.. My motto for my family law cases is, "Putting the Children Before the Conflict." By this I mean that I work to get people divorced with minimal damage to children. Therefore I best serve divorcing clients who are not petty or hateful, but who want to get through this inevitably painful process as reasonably as possible.. Sometimes aggressiveness is appropriate in family proceedings, and then I will be aggressive. But far more often I've gotten the best result for clients in family cases by trying to be a peacemaker instead of attempting to demean or hurt the opposing party. This is crucial when children are involved -- children want, and need, to love both of their parents. A good family law attorney always keeps that in mind. My own experience as a father who went through a divorce always informs this attitude.
