When Kristina Retzlaff went to law school, she chose a career that would allow her to help people in their day-to-day lives. “I chose family law because I wanted to work with people who, on a daily basis, would not normally have a need for an attorney,” Kristina says. “I knew this practice area would be most rewarding to me as an attorney. Being able to help people through difficult times in their lives is what makes my job more fulfilling than the average job.”. Kristina says, “What I enjoy most as I work with my clients is seeing the point when they realize that they are going to be okay. Early in the process of a divorce, or any lawsuit, really, people have a lot of doubt about the legal system, their future, their finances, and the children. With my help, there comes a point in the process when they realize ‘life’s going to be different, but I’m still going to be fine’. It is extremely rewarding to get them to that point.”. Kristina Retzlaff graduated from the University of Kansas School of Law in 2004 and served as staff articles editor on the Kansas Journal of Law and Public Policy. She also participated in the Elder Law Clinic and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program while a law student. For several years, Kristina traveled through the country as a regional adviser for her sorority, Delta Gamma.. Kristina received her Bachelor’s Degrees in Economics and Communications, cum laude, from Wichita State University in 2001. As a student at Wichita State University, Kristina worked as a student intern for then-University President Donald Beggs. She also chaired the Hippodrome committee, and was a vice-president for her sorority.. For the first six years of her legal career, Kristina focused her practice on Social Security Disability claims. She expanded her practice area to family law five years ago. Kristina spent ten years as an LSAT, MCAT, ACT, and SAT Instructor for Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions.. Since 2015, Kristina has served as a court-appointed mediator and Limited Case Manager. She enjoys helping her LCM clients come to agreements that allow them to avoid a trial. In all of her work, Kristina puts her emphasis on helping people navigate the legal system during rough times in their personal lives.. Professionally, Kristina serves as co-chair of the Family Law Committee at the Wichita Bar Association. She is also a member of the Wesley E. Brown Inn of Court, an organization of attorneys and judges dedicated to the professionalism in the administration of justice. Personally, Kristina is a member of St. Jude Catholic Church where she serves on the welcoming committee. She also volunteers her time serving on the PTO for her children’s schools. Nicole Crites began her legal career all the way back in high school when she participated in Volusia County's Teen Court Program. This program is designed as a diversionary program for juvenile defendants with minor criminal charges. Nicole volunteered as a teen prosecutor and went on to win Prosecutor of the Year in her county.. Nicole's commitment to service continued into adulthood, when she became a volunteer Guardian ad Litem for Alachua County. Having not even started law school yet, Nicole had plenty of experience making court appearances, speaking to judges, and confronting uncomfortable truths in pursuit of the best interests of the children she served. It was through these experiences that Nicole solidified her desire to help families going through tough times, and more specifically, help the children of families going through tough times.. Nicole received her undergraduate degree from the University of Florida in 2011 and went on to receive her Juris Doctorate from the University of Florida, Levin College of Law. While in law school, Nicole participated in the prosecution clinic and worked in the Domestic Violence Unit of the State Attorney's Office in the Eighth Judicial Circuit, seeking justice and, most importantly, safety for the victims of domestic violence.. After being admitted to the Florida bar and working in domestic relations in Florida, Nicole decided to move closer to her family in Atlanta. Nicole continued to work in domestic relations law after her move and has frequently litigated complex matters, involving trusts, closely held businesses, complicated child custody matters, and equitable division of assets whose value is difficult to ascertain. Nicole fervently believes that it is best for children if their parents can resolve issues through a collaborative and non-adversarial approach. However, Nicole recognizes this approach is not always feasible for certain litigants and has developed an assertive and confident style of litigation in the courtroom. Nicole understands that there is wisdom in the Art of War, and that a long-term strategy, not short-term tactics, leads to the best results for clients. Nicole doesn't engage in foolishness which only serves to drive up costs and instead focuses her calm demeanor and patience to formulate a strategy designed to get her clients to the end of their litigation with favorable results.. Nicole worked as a professional chef while in undergraduate school and law school, and has brought those skills home. When she is not being a lawyer, she enjoys cooking five-star meals, and being home with her three dogs and two kids.
