Debt collector called family member more than once about me

debt collection attorney Iowa Aug 25, 2026
Location: Iowa I will try to keep this short. I got a personal loan for 10k about 6 years ago. I paid well over 10k back, the creditor never reported my 6 years of on time payments etc. I was barely making ends meet so I stopped paying. I ‘allegedly’ owe a little over 7k. I let it go to collections because I can barely afford gas right now. ANYWAY I have collectors calling me daily. I never answer. I emailed one of them and asked for proof of debt, he was an asshole but sent it. But now a new debt collector is calling daily. I block the calls but now they have called my parents. They don’t answer but I have proof of two voicemails on my mom’s phone from the same debt collector. Only said their name, say they are calling about me and left a call back number. From what I’ve read they aren’t suppose to contact family more than once? Do I have any leverage here? What should my next steps be? Again I am BROKE. Tia
